Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB - Review
We have been fortunate to have the Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB unit exclusively in Spain. This hard disk drive is not intended for the domestic sector, it is focused on the professional segment. Being able to access the first sample that arrives in Spain has been a luxury and not everyone has the ability to test this unit on professional servers. It can be clearly seen on the label, as it carries a generic sticker. Regarding the benefits, we will see later what the unit offers us and its main characteristics.
Thanks to Toshiba for lending us this hard drive

Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB Technologies
One of the problems with mechanical hard drives in Data Centers is that vibrations can affect other drives in other bays. The Toshiba MG08 family of drives integrates a series of sensors and controllers that minimize vibrations. They also integrate rotary vibration (RV) sensors that compensate for the vibration generated by the rotation of the hard drive platters. This avoids excessive vibration that can affect the rest of the bays.
This Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB drive features security technologies to ensure data integrity. Using Persistent Write Cache Technology, data is secured in the event of a power failure while writing. This data is stored in a Flash type cache. When power is restored to the hard disk, writing from Flash memory resumes
These drives feature Toshiba's proprietary Stable Platter Technology. This technology seeks to minimize vibration by stabilizing the motor shaft on both sides. This also offers improved tracking accuracy and maximum performance in read and write processes.
On the other hand, they integrate Dynamyc Cache Technology, also Toshiba's own. It is a self-contained caching algorithm with built-in buffer management. This allows you to optimize the way the cache is allocated while reading or writing. This is to offer high performance for real-time tasks.
Features Toshiba MG Series 16TB
The MG08 Series Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) Storage Units feature a helium sealed design. The use of helium offers lower energy consumption and a higher storage density. Increasing density is a key driver for business and cloud environments. The MG08 units also make use of Toshiba's own laser welding sealing technology, this ensures that there are no micro leaks of helium, making it remain inside the unit.
These Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB drives have the ability to support SED (Self Encrypting) or SIE (Instant Erase) technologies. It allows fast and complete erasure of data without the need to overwrite the drive for hours on end.
Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB drives feature a 12Gbit/s SAS connector that can also work via a 6Gbit/s SATA interface. The good thing about SAS drives is that they can be installed on SATA controllers, but not the other way around. Indicate that physically the SATA port and the SAS port are identical.

Toshiba MG Series 16TB Benchmark
The Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB hard drive offers us a much higher performance than other hard drives. As we can see, the reading and writing speeds are much higher than domestic HDDs. Something very necessary in the professional segment, since huge amounts of data move.

Conclusion
Being able to enjoy the Toshiba MG08 Series 16TB (MG08ACA16TE) exclusively in Spain is a luxury. Clearly, due to its technologies and characteristics, the unit is specifically designed for the server and data center segment. It offers us a very good performance considering that it is a mechanical unit.
It offers a very good capacity for massive data storage. This unit allows the creation of high capacity storage systems reducing space and costs. In addition, it offers support for SATA and SAS indistinctly, allowing you to create configurations according to the server controller without problems. That it has a Flash cache memory in case the tension goes out and the data is not lost, is a great idea.
- High storage capacity
- Flash cache that stores data in case the drive runs out of power, resuming data storage when power returns.
- Technologies that reduce vibration and drive wear
- Use helium to increase density and efficiency
- Can be installed on SAS and SATA controllers interchangeably
- Intended for 24/7 use
- Reduces the cost of mass storage systems and the amount of space required
- Nothing to highlight
