Mifa Wildbox – Review

The holidays approach. A very common plan is to go to a rural house with friends and spend the night with a barbecue or campfire while listening to very calm music to liven up the atmosphere. Or go to the pool and have the whole world listen to your music. Use cases where mobile speakers are not enough and therefore a portable music box like the Mifa Wildbox is perfect.

On the subject of sound boxes of this type, it is difficult for us to recommend them because they are usually used by people who play music in public places, be it concert queues, parks, or even urban transport. We understand the need to have music and quality equipment nearby, and there are spaces in which to use them. As we said, at private parties outdoors and at a decent volume and without many people around, these portable speakers are quite useful.

We thank MIFA for giving us the product for review.

As always, we start by looking at the front of the product box. By its own design, we see that it is a box for sale on online portals, since it is limited to putting the basics to define the Mifa Wildbox, since the definition of the product is what gains more strength. Even with the brand's own logo it has a small size.

On this side, it only stands out that it has IP67 protection against dust and water, which we will explain soon; and 24 hours of battery life. The protection against water is reflected in the promotional render of the box, with a water splash effect. It is not a bad thing in itself, since it is functional information and makes it easy to find what the IP67 degree of protection is and the characteristics of a product that we have bought online.

The back, dedicated to the official features of the Mifa Wildbox. It also indicates the presence of a USB-C cable to charge it.

A ring of RGB light has special predominance. Those who read us will tell us that we are fans of RGB; as long as it's used well and doesn't detract too much from the product's capabilities, and this is one where we don't see a great deal of RGB integration.

Opening the box, we find a correct packaging cxon protective foam and protective plastic against dust and scratches during transport.

The design of the MIFA Wildbox itself is highly simple and functional. A very intense black color and the MIFA logo in the center.

Almost the entire front is occupied by the two speakers, which indicates large speakers and therefore capable of offering great sound.

At the top, next to the grip, are the control buttons for the Mifa Wildbox. These controls are more than enough to control music locally, and to link the device to other Bluetooth medianet sound systems.

The connection ports are at the back, protected by a cover. These four ports are a USB-C connector, usually for charging, a MicroSD card slot, a USB-A input, and a mini-jack input.

The fact of putting these local inputs allows to have a better sound quality. As a general rule, Bluetooth always compresses audio to be able to broadcast it via wireless signals, so in wireless modes it sounds at a lower volume and with some loss of detail. So, if we want to have the best sound quality, something normal at parties or simply because we appreciate good quality, our best option will be to use any of these ports instead of using Bluetooth.

The RGB of this sound system was promoted on the box itself. Once we see it in person, we feel that it is not impressive. It doesn't have much lighting and only has a few preset effects, which are unimpressive.

For an element that was promoted a lot, it feels insufficient and unattractive to use.

How to get the best sound quality with a sound box?

When we get a new high-quality sound system, be it a new set of speakers, headphones or a music box like the Mifa Wildbox. Above all, we want it to mean an improvement in the quality of the sound we hear. We want to improve the sound quality of our equipment and therefore you have to know what it takes to have the best audio quality.

It is possible, but it requires several steps and factors. The first of these, and possibly the most important, is do not stream music via bluetooth. Sound quality is only as good as the quality of the worst component or transmitter. Many times it is usually the wireless connection. In the case of domestic components, the most widely used and accessible is Bluetooth, which, no matter how much it has advanced in latency, loss of quality still weighs heavily on him for the compression you need.

Bluetooth is still heavily weighed down by the loss of sound quality.

This is what local storage entries are for. That is, the USB port and the MicroSD card reader. In this way it is possible to eliminate several data transfer processes that could introduce flaws in the data transmission and with it the sound quality.

Another important point is use files in FLAC quality. This sound file format allows for lossless compression, but that indicates a much larger file size. If 4 GB or 8 GB can be enough to store thousands of MP3 songs, with FLAC it could barely be a few hundred. That is why high capacity storage is needed for FLAC files. For this Mifa Wildbox, since it has a MicroSD card slot, it would be very appropriate to put a 128 GB one, although from 256 GB, the price of the MicroSD already increases too much. We recommend high-capacity models for those who need a large number of songs in high-quality FLAC.

We must warn that no matter how much we insist on transforming a file in MP3 format to FLAC, does not mean that it will come out with better audio quality. We will be creating a file of much more weight and without compression. Information that was lost in compression from the original recording cannot be recovered.

The best sound quality with a FLAC file must come from the original source, in this case from the record companies, the artists or the author who mixes the different audio tracks. Current digital music stores sell FLAC files, but they are not the most widespread in unofficial circles due to their great weight.

Finally, it is necessary to use a physical sound system to match, which with a physical cable connection and FLAC files, that will be the last bottleneck regarding sound quality. As a general rule, gaming headsets have a certain sound quality, but the bass is accentuated so that footsteps and shots can be heard in war games. For this reason, some headphones are more focused on music, even within the same

Ideally, the spectrum of sound levels of a music system is perfectly level and with large speakers, since they will have the possibility of covering a greater spectrum. In the case of the Mifa Wildbox, comes equipped with large dedicated speakers and some music drives capable of playing in high definition. This means that you can play music in high quality, which translates into less electrical noise during silences, less coupling of the tracks when they reach certain levels, that lower noise levels are heard better… It is not easy to explain what sound is in high definition, but it is felt, although it requires high-quality equipment to notice it.

What is the IP67 certificate and why does the Mifa Wildbox boast of it?

Electronic and mechanical products must comply with safety standards regarding the entry of physical objects and liquids into the products to maintain their integrity. In the case of this Mifa Wildbox, it has an IP67 resistance certificate, which indicates that it is perfectly protected against dust and has good protection against water.

But what exactly does IP67 mean? Are there other certificates apart from IP67? This certification is done through different tests on products that want to enter the market, to ensure that they resist the entry of dust and liquids. Under different tests, it is verified that the operation of the device or product continues well.

First digit, on protection against the entry of physical objects

The first digit of the IP protection factor is the one that indicates the protection against the entry of solid objects, such as sand or gravel in addition to dust in the case of larger objects. To carry out the test, an attempt is made to introduce material of a unified size and if it meets certain protection conditions against the insertion of physical objects, a certain rating is given. The tests that must be passed are the following:

  • Protection Level 0: has no protection
  • Protection Level 1: An attempt is made to introduce a 50 mm sphere that must not enter completely.
  • Protection Level 2: An attempt is made to introduce a 12,5 mm sphere that must not enter completely.
  • Protection Level 3: An attempt is made to insert a 2,5mm sphere that should not go in completely.
  • Protection Level 4: An attempt is made to introduce a 1 mm sphere that must not enter completely.
  • Protection Level 5: Dust can enter, but its entry must not interfere at any time with the correct operation of the device.
  • Protection Level 6: Dust does not enter under any circumstances.

In the case of the Mifa Wildbox, its IP factor is IP67, so in this case, its interior is completely isolated from dust. This makes it ideal to take it to parties on the beach or in the mountains, since the sand of the beach, the most aggressive there is, will not enter it. This is as long as it does not receive blows that could alter this protection by opening weak spots.

Second digit, on protection against liquids

The IEC 60529 standard establishes for the second digit that the equipment to be certified must meet one of the following conditions. During level 1 through 6 tests, the device is placed in what is considered its normal equip location.

  • Protection Level 0: It has no protection and the water enters in a short time.
  • Protection Level 1: Protected against dripping water. Water must not enter when it is dropped, from a height of 200 mm with respect to the equipment, for 10 minutes at a rate of 3-5 mm³ per minute.
  • Protection Level 2: Water does not enter when dropped, for 10 minutes at a rate of 3-5 mm³ per minute. It is tested four times at a rate of one for each 15° turn both vertically and horizontally, starting each time from the normal working position.
  • Protection Level 3; Protected against water mist. The nebulized water does not enter at an angle of up to 60° to the right and left of the vertical at an average of 11 liters per minute and at a pressure of 80-100 kN/m² for a time that is at least 5 minutes.
  • Protection Level 4: Protected against water jets. Water thrown from any angle at an average of 10 liters per minute and at a pressure of 80-100 kN/m² must not enter for at least 5 minutes.
  • Protection Level 5: protection against water jets. Water jetted from a 6,3 mm diameter nozzle, at an average of 12,5 liters per minute and at a pressure of 30 kN/m² for a time of at least 3 minutes and at a pressure of at least 3 meters.
  • Protection Level 6: Protection against very powerful jets of water. Water thrown in jets from a 12,5 mm diameter nozzle, at an average of 100 liters per minute and at a pressure of 100 kN/m² for at least 3 minutes and at a distance of at least 3 meters, must not enter.
  • Protection Level 7: From this step on, complete immersion tests are carried out. To reach this level, the object must withstand, without any leaks, complete immersion at 1 meter for 30 minutes.
  • Protection Level 8: It must withstand, without any filtration, complete and continuous immersion to the depth and for the time specified by the manufacturer of the product with the agreement of the client. But they have to be more severe conditions than those specified for the value 7.
  • 9K protection level: Protection against powerful high temperature water jets. The The water jet will have a volume of water between 14 and 16 liters per minute, at a pressure: between 8.000 and 10.000 kPa / 80 to 100 Bar; at a distance between 0.1 m and 0.15 m, and the water temperature will be 80 °C. This Protection Level is intended for industrial grade protection.

In the case of the Mifa WildBox, protection level 7 in liquids indicates that it will be well protected from water in the event that it starts to rain if we use it outdoors. Of course, as with the protection indicator against physical objects, if it is damaged enough to have weak points, the protection can be rendered useless. In the case of immersion, care must be taken if it gets wet with sea water, since IP tests are done with fresh water, which does not have as much concentration of minerals or salt.

Experience and conclusion with the Mifa Wildbox Conclusion

We have used this Mifa Wildbox in an office environment. This is that for several days it has been as part of the musical thread. In this use case, which is going to be very ordinary, it has worked especially well thanks to a simple connection via bluetooth. With a one of a few hours, we haven't had to charge it in a week, and we've put it to the test for use as an external battery, and it's useful. Very surely in the case of a getaway to a rural house or to the mountains, it can replace a battery to charge the mobile, but its use only as a battery is inappropriate.

But it is not its main use, but to offer music that is easy to connect and manage, and that sounds good, and that we have done. In various musical genres we have hardly noticed any noticeable loss in audio quality. The difference between its use through Bluetooth and a MicroSD is noticeable as we said. So we highly recommend using playback on local storage. It is a music box that we would take with us to a getaway in a rural house to give atmosphere.

However, some little things weigh down the experience a bit, without being accurate. Almost everything lies in the battery, not so much its duration but its maintenance. While it was easy to connect Bluetooth, it is difficult to know the battery you have because, unless it has escaped us, there is no internal way of knowing the battery it has left if it is not how a mobile phone informs us of the battery of a Bluetooth device. Its charging is slow, so it will be an element that we recommend leaving charging for a couple of nights before the big getaway. Finally, here we are fans of RGB, well implemented, but here the default effects are not impressive and the lighting is very dim. While it could have given a lot more ambience, RGB feels like it consumes more battery power than it puts in.

Knowing how much battery is left is difficult, and it has a slow charge.

But in this price range, a music box with a lot of battery and tremendous ease of use, we can recommend it in this case. If you can put a lot of use to it, you will easily prepare playlists for getaways to the beach, the mountains or anywhere where some appropriate music helps to improve the experience. The fact that it is certified with IP67 protection and serves as an external mobile battery helps a lot to opt for it, since for this price range, you want something to last and be resistant to rain, dusty winds, sand and be something more than a Bluetooth speaker.

  • Good battery life.
  • Good portable audio quality.
  • IP67 certification, which makes it resistant to adversity.
  • It is used to charge mobiles in an emergency.
  • It's hard to know how much battery you have left.
  • Slow charging.
  • Its RGB does nothing for it, except for small predefined aesthetic lights for night parties.

The Mifa Wildbox is a music box that offers, above all, good audio quality and a lot of battery.
