Review: Turtle Beach Recon 70 Headset

Turtle Beach offers us with the Recon 70 a product more than solvent to play. Who wants something more complex and powerful, perhaps this is a bit insufficient.

With the so-called Gaming peripherals there is a huge range of helmets focused on these needs. Their priorities are to have a good sound, which in games like Apex Legens or Fortnite is ideal for listening to our enemies; comfort to play for hours, and a solvent microphone. The Recon 70 from Tutle Beach designed to be used on a Nintendo Switch are more than enough.

Good helmets to play

Let's go to the important thing: the sound. We tested the Recon 70 with direct connection to Nintendo Switch and the result is that they have everything that is asked of a gaming headset in this regard. They have a wide sound range and could even be used for some audio editing for more than just amateur jobs. Even turning the volume up to almost the maximum, you can hardly hear the white noise that represents silence that is recorded in sound devices.

It may be an exceptional case of its own, but it's not the most comfortable Turtle Beach product I've tried. The headband padding for the top of the head can be quite sparse for some and at times we feel like it hits the frame. The one with the helmets is sometimes too bulky and small. They get to isolate the sound very well as they have to be, but the leather-like material becomes very heavy. And that shows when we have long gaming sessions.

At least on the subject of weight it is quite light and does not bother in this stink. We imagine that depending on each person and how the helmets are adjusted. If so, we say that it is very important to fit them well so that comfort does not suffer.

About the microphone, little can be said. We have tested it and there is no bad sound. Better than expected for online games but little can be compared with tabletop microphones designed for quality more than accompanying headphones. To record a podcast or start narrating videos on YouTube, it complies with a little audio editing and some default settings, but the difference will be noticeable. Of course, those who want these headphones will want the microphone for voice chats in online games and Discord and it would be unfair to ask for a high-end quality to a product that goes to a different audience.

Offering just enough for a good product

Aside from the above, the Recon 70s do not offer much more in the package or features. They have a volume regulator where it needs to be: at the back of the ear of the helmet instead of at a point on the cable. This is important because it makes it much easier and faster to find it in case of need, and because it prevents it from deteriorating over time according to other experiences I have had with gaming helmets.

One of the few major drawbacks I have is that it uses a single mini jack port for the microphone and headphones, so there may be certain incompatibilities if we want to use it on a PC. And depending on the computer, if we want to use both the microphone and the headphones we will have to use a plug that separates the input and output channels, which are not included in the package.

And that's all the Turtle Beach Recon 70s have to offer. Its price is adjusted for a product of something more mid-range without going into the high-end. They work better than usual in sound and microphone, ideal for the gaming environment. They would not be for so much in different more professional environments such as sound editing or recording podcasts since there are better products for this.

Would we recommend the Recon 70 to someone who wants headsets to play on Nintendo Switch, PlaYStation 4 or PC? Quite. They are not excessively expensive and they fulfill the expected functions very well for products in this range.
