Unboxing Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory

Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory front case

Like the vast majority of products, these headphones arrive in a large cardboard box with a photo of the headphones on the front. In this case we have received the white headphones. We can see on the back the main characteristics of these gaming headphones. While the Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory could be classified as 'simple', they really are not so much.

Cougar Phontum Essential back box

Internally, the amount of elements that we find is minimal. Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory headphones arrive in a plastic holder for proper storage. Additionally in the box we find a small user manual and a TRS jack to a 3.5mm TRRS jack adapter.

Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory Design

Cougar Phontum Essential ear pads

The first thing that stands out about these gaming headphones is that they have two very thick ear pads. Also noteworthy is the headband pad that has holes to improve breathability. The headband and the headband are black, although the outer part has been finished in white synthetic leather.

The height adjustment system of the headband also stands out. It changes from the traditional style, from a system that is collected inside the headband to a system of pivots. This system lacks a fixed anchoring solution, they are held by pressure with our head, which is quite interesting.

Cougar Phontum Essential Side

These Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory did not have replacement pads, while the first Essential did have this one. The pads are the highlight, as their outer contour is 10cm, while inside it is 6x5cm.

Features Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory

Cougar Phontum Essential head-on

These gaming headphones have 40mm drivers, which is usually the usual size for gaming headphones. These Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory support a frequency range from 20Hz to 20kHz. For gaming, you don't need a larger frequency spectrum. These speakers also have an impedance of 32Ω and a sensitivity of 101dB. They are values within normal parameters for gaming headsets.

microphone

The microphone of the Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory is characterized by being flexible, allowing good adaptability. Does this microphone have a noise cancellation system, or what is something to consider. This microphone moves in a range from 100Hz to 10kHz, with a sensitivity of -40dB and an impedance of 2.2kΩ

Cougar Phontum Essential jack connector

These gaming headphones have a cable with a good quality rubber cover and a length of 1.9 meters. The cable ends in a traditional 3.5mm TRS jack connector system. At about 40cm from the microphone we find a volume regulator and the mute for the microphone. Note that we also have the 3.5mm TRRS jack in case we want to connect them to a smartphone.

Conclusion

The Cougar Phontum Essential Ivory headphones are a mid-range solution that is in some respects slightly above this range. In terms of technical characteristics they are similar to other solutions, but in terms of design they offer interesting things. Above all, the two very thick pads attract attention, something that is not usually seen. The pads are usually quite thin and may not be the best solution.

One point that we especially liked is that it brings a TRS to TRRS adapter, allowing it to be connected to consoles, tablets and smartphones. This is not usual, since you opt for one connector or another, normally.

To be a mid-range solution they are not bad, they have positive aspects and others not so much. The microphone has a good sound quality, something that is very appreciated. Perhaps the negative part is in the integrated speakers, which lack punch in the bass. At this point it is a bit short.
