Review: Elgato Cam Link 4K Capture

Analysis of the Elgato Cam Link 4K direct camera capture system, which allows converting a DLSR camera into a webcam.

Streaming is a trend thanks to platforms like YouTube and more recently Twitch. Streaming video in real time from anywhere in the world is common today. These platforms have democratized streaming by any user. To make it easier for users to transmit in the best possible quality, Elgato has developed the Elgato Cam Link 4K device. This device allows us to use a DSLR camera, camcorders or even a GoPro as a webcam.

The Elgato brand, recently acquired by Corsair, has specialized in capture and streaming devices. We speak of the best in this segment, offering unique components of high quality. The Cam Link 4K is one of the latest solutions developed, as is the 4K60 Capture that we recently analyzed. The current trend is the development of solutions for 4K. Any professional YouTuber already uses 4K SLR cameras to record their videos and with this device we can transmit in 4K without problems.

Elgato Cam Link 4K Design

We have before us a fairly simple device that anyone could mistake for a pen drive or some kind of HDMI adapter. The interesting thing is that this system is extremely compact and saves space. This device has a USB Type-A connector that connects to our chassis. We have a female HDMI at the other end to connect the camera we want to use.

Elgato has made this device "Plug & Play". The body of this adapter has a rounded format and is quite clean and simple, with a black plastic casing. We can see the Elgato logo and also the words “Cam Link”. It has a strip where there is a status LED that indicates that it is working. Additionally, the body stands out for having a robust construction that does not give a feeling of fragility.

Something very interesting is that the box has a USB Type-A extender, since the Cam Link 4K can disturb or prevent us from installing another device in an adjacent USB port. It should be noted that to use this device we need a USB 3.0 or higher, previous connectors are not valid.

For the HDMI port, no type of cable has been added to the kit, as with USB. This makes sense to a certain extent as some cameras may have smaller HDMI ports, such as a micro-HDMI.

Conclusion

This Elgato Cam Link 4K adapter has been developed especially for streamers who want to offer their followers the best possible image quality. Being compatible with DSLR cameras, camcorders or sports cameras, anyone can use it. Before you buy it, we want to make it clear that we must go to the Elgato website to see which cameras it is compatible with, since it is not compatible with all those on the market.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects is that it can record at 4K @ 30FPS or at FullHD @ 60FPS. It is also very interesting that it is a system of simplified and fast use. Also note that this does not require any type of driver, and can be used with XSplit or OBS Studio.
