Gigabyte AORUS Z390 Xtreme - We reviewed a motherboard for Intel Coffee Lake processors

We analyze the Gigabyte AORUS Z390 Xtreme motherboard, designed for Intel Core processors of 8th and 9th Generation with high capacity for overclocking.

The motherboard is a very important element and must be consistent with the processor we choose to mount our system. VRM phases

This motherboard has a total of 16 VRM phases with a large heatsink to control the temperature of the same. This motherboard is intended to support 8th Gen and 9th Gen Intel Core processors. It seamlessly supports the 9-core 9900-thread Core i8-16K and its overclocking.

All VRM phases have the ability to deliver 60A thanks to the use of PowlRstage IR MOSFETs. The power phases offer us a total of 960A, more than enough for all the overclocking to which we want to subject this motherboard. Logically it is not intended for ordinary mortals, it is intended for advanced users.

This motherboard is designed by and for overclocking. For this reason, it has a total of two connectors for temperature sensors. It also integrates a button for power, reset and Clear CMOS. A button for automatic overclocking has also been integrated, in case we want to be safe.

The M.2 drives have a big problem and it is the temperature. If these do not have even a passive heatsink, they lead to their thermal limit. When this happens automatically the performance of the unit is lowered to lower its temperature.

Gigabyte is aware of this and to avoid problems it has integrated three heatsinks for M.2 drives. Two of these heatsinks are matched with the chipset heatsink. The last one is separate.

Quality sound

Not only overclocking and M.2 heatsinks the user lives, other quality elements are needed, such as the sound system. Gigabyte's motherboard integrates a Realtek ALC1220-VB chip along with an ESS9018K2M DAC. For the signal processing of the left and right channels, it integrates two LME49720 chips, one per channel.

This motherboard has a special circuit that prevents sound popping when connecting or disconnecting a device. It has an automatic impedance detection system for headphones between 6Ω and 600Ω, along with an automatic output power system.

Audiophile grade capacitors have been integrated for excellent acoustic sound. In addition, the gold-plated jack connectors offer us great resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

A high precision TXC oscillator has also been provided for digital converters. Finally, high-quality audiophile capacitors have been integrated. They are WIMA capacitors that will offer us a crystalline and balanced sound.

90º connectors

Gigabyte has arranged the connectors at the edge of the motherboard and at a 90º angle to facilitate cable management. The 24-pin connector, the EPS connector on the bottom, and the SATA ports are angled. Note that the 6-pin EPS connector is designed for SLI and CrossFire configurations.


This motherboard has a specific backplate designed to offer more consistency to it. As it is intended to withstand thoughtful hardware and a lot of component movement, a robust system has been created to prevent damage. It will also help a little to dissipate the heat from the motherboard.

The motherboard comes with a controller for fans and RGB strips. The AORUS RGB Fan Commander has the ability to handle up to eight RGB fans. This device has eight special connectors designed by Gigabyte.

Each of these features a 4-pin PWM connector for fans, a 5050-pin RGB 4 connector and a 3-pin ARGB connector. Through this we can control up to 8 PWM fans. It also has two USB 2.0 outlets to the front panel that allow the connection of two temperature sensors to manage the fans.

Inside the box we find two kits of velcro strips for cable management with the AORUS logo. A WiFi and Bluetooth antenna have been integrated. Gigabyte also offers us an SLI connector for two graphics. We also have two temperature sensors, six SATA III cables, RGB connector extensions, a GC-Connector and a USB stick with the necessary drivers and software.

Rear I / O panel

Gigabyte has integrated a great connectivity on this Gigabyte AORUS Z390 Xtreme. The first thing that stands out are the two connectors for the WiFi and Bluetooth antenna. It has two Ethernet ports, one Intel GbE Lan 1GBps in black and one based on the Aquantia GbE Lan 10Gbps chip in red.

This motherboard also has four USB 3.1 Type-A Gen2 in red. It has two USB Type-C Gen2 ports compatible with Thunderbolt 3. This motherboard has two USB 3.0 Type-A in blue and two USB 2.0 Type-A in black. An HDMI port has also been provided. Finally, it should be noted that gold-plated jack connectors and a SPDIF connector for sound through fiber optics have been integrated.

The Gigabyte AORUS Z390 Xtreme motherboard is not intended for ordinary mortals. It's been specifically for high-end and overclockable processors like the Core i9-9900K. For that, a total of 16 VRM phases have been installed with a capacity of 960 amps.
