Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black - Review

The cooling in the computer components is very important, but in the processor more. We must seek, as far as possible, that the processor works at an optimal temperature. For this there are many solutions and among the most outstanding is the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black. This heatsink belongs to the new range of Noctua products that are completely manufactured in black. A range that abandons the famous earth colors of the Austrian brand.

Thanks to Noctua for lending us this heatsink

Unboxing Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

nh-d15 night heatsink chromax.black box

The new range of chromax.black heatsinks and fans is characterized by 'painting' the recognized products of the Noctua range in black. This color is also very present in the box of these products. It really is the heatsink and the most recognized fans of the brand but in black.

nh-d15 chromax.black back case heatsink

We can see on the back the specifications of this Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black heatsink. They really are the same specs and features as the 'normal' models. The difference is in the aesthetics, which adapts to modern times, leaving earth tones behind. Luckily, only a more friendly color with the gaming setups has been sought and no LEDs have been added, something that the company does not plan to do either.

Inside the box, of course, we find all the couplings for the different types of socket. Adapters for Intel and AMD processors are included. We also see a series of cables intended to modify the performance of the fans of this heatsink. Also included is an NT-H1 thermal paste syringe with various uses (depending on processor)

nh-d15 night heatsink chromax.black fin block

We have in a box the block of dissipation fins with the central fan mounted. We find the second fan in a separate box. The interesting thing about this heatsink is that the fans are not screwed on, but are held by metal brackets.

nh-d15 chromax.black lateral heatsink

The high-density aluminum fin block dips into two zones. Space is left, as we can see, for the installation of a fan in the center. If we install the second fan in the front part we can obtain a great air flow and dissipate any processor on the market.

nh-d15 night heatsink chromax.black heatsink block

As we can see, this heatsink has six 8mm pipes for each block of aluminum fins. What is sought is the highest possible efficiency in the transfer of heat to the aluminum fins. The faster and more distributed the heat reaches the aluminum fins, the easier it will dissipate and the processor will work in better condition.

Something interesting about the Noctua heatsinks is their lateral structure of the aluminum fins. We can see in the image of the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black that it seems that the side is closed. It is not really closed at all, but its design allows the air to be channeled. This prevents air leaks towards the side of the heatsink and improves the efficiency of heat dissipation by generating a tunnel effect.

Features Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

heatsink noctua nh-d15 chromax.black fan detail

The Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black heatsink makes use of the Noctua NF-A15 HS-PWM chromax.black 140mm fans. They are characterized by implementing the SSO2 bearings developed by the company. They can operate between 300RPM and 1500RPM, although in LNA configuration it is limited to 1200RPM. In addition, they are quite silent, since at maximum performance they reach 24.6dBA.

The base of this heatsink as well as the pipes are completely made of copper. This allows more efficient heat transfer throughout the tube. Regarding the aluminum fins, these are made of aluminum, less efficient than copper, but lighter, thus generating a fairly well balanced structure in performance / weight.

This heatsink has a special design designed to avoid touching with RAM memories. We can see that the bottom of the fin block seems 'cut off' thinking of RAM modules and high VRM phase sinks. The front fan can be adjusted in height, thus adapting to the needs of each moment.

Conclusion

The Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black heatsink has no performance improvements over the 'conventional' model. The company simply adapts the design to the demand made by users. Change the typical earth colors of the Austrian company for more modern colors intended for gaming setups. Performance is still just as good, as can be seen from the benchmark graph above. You should keep in mind that the processor is a Ryzen 5 2600X with stable overclocking on all cores.

We must bear in mind that this heatsink is one of the highest on the market. Before buying it, you must make sure that your chassis fits a 165mm high heatsink. You should also take into consideration that this heatsink is quite heavy, and can cause buckling on the motherboard. The positive is that it has great heat dissipation power even with processor overclocking.

  • A more modern aesthetic adapted to the new times
  • Lacks any type of RGB led lighting
  • It is very quiet even when the fans run at high speeds
  • A syringe of thermal paste NT-H1 is included for various uses
  • Design fully compatible with all RAM memory modules on the market
  • As always, installation is really easy
  • The amount of plastic is moderate, just a little to protect the fan from blows, the rest of the items arrive in cardboard boxes
  • Very somewhat and heavy, not suitable for all chassis on the market
