Razer Huntsman - Review

Razer's big bet to offer purely gaming-focused keyboards has been to develop its own switches. The full-design Razer Huntsman keyboard makes use of the company's own opto-mechanical switches. How could it be otherwise, it is a high quality product, with a very careful design and the best possible features.

Thanks to Razer for giving us this gaming keyboard

Razer Huntsman Unboxing

This keyboard has something quite interesting in its box and that is that there is a space that allows us to test the mechanical optical switches. They are the new switches developed by Razer directly focused on gaming. It is not usual for keyboards to have this type of hole in the box that allows them to 'test' these new switches and thus get an idea of touch.

If we turn the case of this Razer Huntsman gaming keyboard, we can see the keyboard in all its glory. Razer takes particular care in the durability of its switches and RGB Chroma lighting system.

Razer highlights us that they make use of the new optical-mechanical Clicky Optical Switch. They are mechanical switches whose activation is carried out by means of a small laser beam. This offers, in theory, a more precise activation over keyboards that feature purely mechanical switches.

Razer Huntsman design

The keyboard at a glance can look like many other conventional keyboards. It presents a very simple and clean design, without any type of element that stands out from the rest. Even the Razer lettering appears discreetly. Perhaps the typical multimedia keys on the numeric keyboard are missing, where there is more than enough room. The Razer Huntsman integrates them into the function keys through a key combination, something quite cumbersome when we play.

Something that we must demand of any keyboard is that it have a layout in Spanish, as is the case. It has the Spanish configuration with the 'Ñ', something that deserves to be highlighted. For the rest it has nothing more special, except that the multimedia and RGB keys have been integrated into the function keys.

Razer Huntsman features customizable RGB lighting via software. With the keys off you can see the silkscreen perfectly and with the RGB active, the silkscreen of each letter can be seen very clearly. Also, the RGB is pretty smooth, it's neither overly bright nor too dull, it's in the right term.

Razer Huntsman Features

This keyboard stands out for being a full format, or what is the same, it has a numeric keyboard. This Razer Huntsman has dimensions of 484x232x58mm with a total weight of 862 grams. The structure is made of high quality aluminum with a very comfortable plastic coating that is pleasant to the touch. The keycaps are made of ABS plastic for great durability.

Let's now see the possibilities of the function keys (Fn):

  • F1 - F3: Volume control
  • F5 - F7: Multimedia
  • F9: Macro
  • F10: Gaming mode
  • F11 - F12: Illumination intensity

In addition, the 'pause' key has the function of suspending our PC.

The Razer Clicky Optical Switch has been introduced for this keyboard. When we press, the mechanism moves, letting a beam of light go through the axis of the switch and reflecting the pressing of the key. The company indicates that physical contact is reduced and that is how it has achieved a durability of more than 100 million keystrokes.

Clicky Optical Switch Specifications:

  • Ideal for gaming
  • Actuation force: 45cN (45g)
  • Travel distance: 1.5mm
  • Activation: 1.5mm

In order to improve the durability of the keyboard, it has a really elegant mesh design. It has also appeared in portability, with a simple to put flange. The USB port for connection to the system is green and has a cap for when we transport it, preventing dust or other dirt from entering.

Conclusion

This Razer Huntsman keyboard features the company's new optical-mechanical switches , which offer a very interesting feel. The travel distance of these purple switches is very short, shorter than other solutions on the market. Clearly, this keyboard is focused on gaming, which is ultimately its primary purpose. Furthermore, the RGB lighting is very subtle, which is a nice touch, and it's highly customizable through the company's software.

The most uncomfortable part of the Razer keyboard may be the multimedia keys. Despite the fact that there is plenty of space on the numeric keyboard, the multimedia keys have been combined with the function key. When we are playing games, it is easier to press a key than not to be pressing two keys, realistically. It is clear that the idea is to make a very compact keyboard, but there is more than enough room to separate the multimedia and function keys.

  • Optical-mechanical switches designed directly for gaming
  • Very short switch travel
  • High quality design and finish
  • High durability keycaps
  • Serigraph of the keycaps very good
  • Very soft RGB lighting customizable via software
  • The durability of the switches far superior to any other solution on the market
  • Multimedia keys combined with function keys even though there is room to put them
  • Without wrist rest
