How to improve your Free WiFi - Step by step

Improving or optimizing the WiFi connection is a very simple process, so much so that you don't need money or knowledge. In this guide we will explain how to improve your free WiFi step by step.

Today the use of wireless connections at home is very common, or rather essential. Since almost everyone has a smartphone and generally the router is the one who connects us to the internet at home or at work.

But what not everyone knows is that the WiFi connection can be optimized and with this we will improve our connection with the different devices that connect to the router. And in this post, our intention is to explain to you how we can improve free WiFi with fairly simple actions.

Necessary Knowledge?

The only thing we must have is some basic knowledge about what WiFi is and how it works, something that we can explain in a fairly simple way.

What is WiFi connection?

The WiFi connection is a wireless connection that allows data to be sent over the air using electromagnetic pulses. YES, just like traditional radio and television waves that allow us to watch different channels.

The frequency is expressed in Hertz, and that comes to measure the number of repetitions of an electromagnetic wave in one second. The higher the value, the better. In the case of 1000Hz (Hz is the symbol for Hertz - Hertz) and therefore, we will talk about 1GHz (Giga Hertz)

In the case of WiFi, it can work at two frequencies: 2,4GHz and 5GHz. Older devices (routers, mobiles and others) can only work at 2,4 GHz. Newer devices can also work at 5GHz. Many of them are indicated as 'dual band', which means that they support both frequencies.

What is the router?

The router, or better called router modem, is that device that you install when you register the internet connection at home. Facing the exterior, it can be ADSL or fiber optics. The router is the device that is responsible for managing our internet connection.

Although it has more options and functions, we are only going to touch another one, in addition to managing our internet connection, it also takes care of the management of the devices that connect to it, either by cable or by wireless WiFi connection.

Let's do it

Well with everything explained we should already have the necessary knowledge and if you have noticed, they are very simple and easy to understand explanations.

First of all we MUST KNOW what we are going to teach you here does not put your Internet connection at risk.

So with that being said, GET TO WORK.

First step

Before I have talked about frequencies, if our router and device have 2,4GHz, you have to use that band. If you have the 5GHz band, we can use both at the same time.

You use one or the other, it must be said that within each band there are 13 channels. They are small variations of the base frequency that allow the same frequency to not collapse.

Leave it to us as a simple equivalency: it is like a highway that has 14 lanes, depending on the traffic in one or the other lane, the traffic will be more or less saturated in that lane.

Depending on the neighbors you have nearby, there will be many routers in a very small area, and if they all use the same channel there will be saturation. So knowing which one we use and adjusting it will come first.

How do I know which channel I am using?

The easiest way to know which channel you are using and to know which is the one with the least congestion is by using an APP for the mobile, in this case we talk about “WiFi Analyzer” an application that will allow us to see our channel and the saturation of the channels.

The vast majority of routers use channels 1 through 6, although that depends on several factors. If you see many networks on those channels, what we should do is configure our WiFi on the channel with less saturation.

How do I change the WiFi channel?

This is perhaps the most difficult step in this tutorial, and it is that you have to access the router configuration. To find out how to access the router, we advise you for the moment to search the internet. Each router and each operator have users and passwords tend to vary. Some models have the access username and password at the bottom (Soon we will upload an extensive guide talking about this topic and showing how to find it)

We simply access the router, we go to the WiFi configuration and within that option we go to advanced settings, where we will see an image like the following.

If you notice there is a drop-down box where it says channel, we will simply put there the channel that has been less saturated in the "Wifi Analyzer" application and that's it, your connection has improved somewhat.

Second step

Now that we have the channel well configured we go to the next step which will be to locate the router correctly. NO, we mean to orient the antennas, which should always and generally face upwards.

Ideally, you should place the router more or less in the center of the home or office. This can be very difficult since we are tied to the input cable of the connection in our home. In the case of ADSL, it is easier to move the router, but in the case of fiber optics, it can be more difficult. Moving the router to the center of the home has a cost and we have indicated that it would be free, so we leave it to your choice, but it is highly recommended.

What we mean is the height. Many people place the router on a low auxiliary table, which is the height where there is usually more furniture and objects in a home or office and that make it difficult for the signal to pass, making it lose power, and this should not happen.

Other people instead place it near the ceiling. This happens a lot in offices where there is a rack cabinet for communications, and this is also a problem.

Let's think that the WiFi signal in the omni-directional antennas that come with the routers expand like a DONUT (see next image)

With that image in mind and after the comments above, the closest to ideal. Placing the router just a little above the middle of the ceiling height is ideal. And always on a wall that is not occupied. Nothing from inside a shelf or near appliances with electrical consumption such as microwaves, televisions, refrigerators or ovens, since these will dampen the output signal a lot.

Third step

A small adjustment that you can make is to use aluminum foil. This solution does not amplify the signal of the WiFi network, it simply redirects the waves.

Imagine the signal donut, and your router on one of the exterior walls of your house. YES, you are right, much of this signal goes out and is lost signal power.

We cannot recover it 100% without changing the antenna for another, but we can help redirect the signal. Placing a piece of aluminum foil right between the router and the wall, in such a way that the signal will largely bounce off the aluminum foil and return to the interior of the house.

The size will depend on whether your router has external or internal antennas, but in general, a 30 × 30-centimeter piece is usually enough.

Well, with these 3 simple steps we have already improved free WiFi.

Other possibilities

There are other more complex methods such as changing antennas, configuring QoS, changing power resistors in the router or adding WiFi access points. They are options that have additional costs, so we do not consider them in this article. For this post we have focused on improving free WiFi.

It is likely that we will be adding new methods and expanding this post. If you know other simple and cost-free methods, you can leave them in the comments and we will study them.

At the moment nothing more to say. We hope it will be of help to you and if so, that you share it with your friends and family so that they can also improve the free WiFi.
