How to get a verified Twitter account if you are famous

Verified account status on social networks like Twitter is a way of making it clear that an account is officially owned by a relevant person. It is the best tool you have to distinguish it from parody accounts and to avoid identity theft.

Many have wondered how it is possible to achieve this state and what is needed for it. Whether you're a top journalist, comedian, or content creator, a verified account is simultaneously a symbol of status, security, and brand reaffirmation. Since 2017 the process was limited to a few people who they considered important, but recently Twitter reopened the process of requesting it manually, thus opening the possibility that more people can request it.

Today, only about 360 accounts have the verified button. Now with the new system they hope to reach more people. Although it implies a waiting time of between one and four weeks. In addition, they have clarified what is needed to be able to request it and have it granted.

Get verified Twitter account status

First, you have to take into account what type of person it is that has a verified account on Twitter. These are people known to the general public and that people will seek to follow. It is not worth simply having many followers, but that we are sought out and recognized for a recognized work in the public sphere. Verified account status is granted to members who enter from one of the following parameters:

  • Members of governments.
  • Companies, brands and organizations.
  • Press organizations and journalists.
  • Entertainment people.
  • Sportsmen and eSports athletes.
  • Activists, organizers and other influential people.
  • Scientists
  • Academics.
  • Religious leaders.

To be verified, an account first must establish its authenticity providing a photo of an official government-issued ID, an official email address relevant to the chosen category, or an official website referencing Twitter account.

Requirements and obligations of a verified account on Twitter

Each of the specified categories has its own sets of rules about what qualifies a person as valid for verification. For example, journalists must adhere to professional standards, such as fact-checking. In the case of members of entertainment or athletes, they must be included in professional databases, such as IMDb or Sportradar. Being mentioned by the verified press in news articles can help brands and many people qualify.

In the category of «other influential individuals«Twitter has created a system that requires a combination of criteria related to both Twitter activity and off-site notoriety to be considered noteworthy, such as a stable Wikipedia article, a profile on Google Trends, mentions in news stories, or being included among the leaders of an official website with «known promotion job«; while also asking for compliance with a limit on follower count or activity on the site.

verified accounts will be held accountable for the tweets they post, and they must follow the Twitter Rules like everyone else. Verified accounts that violate the rules will see their badge removed and this penalty can be determined on a case-by-case basis. A serious violation could result in immediate plaque removal, but other violations may not result in the same action.

Verified accounts must have a “complete” profile, which will consist of the following:

  • Profile name
  • Profile picture
  • Confirmed email or confirmed phone number.

The account must also be active in the past six months and there cannot be a Twitter rule violation in the past 12 months that resulted in a seven-day or 12-hour lockout. By doing this they want to prevent potentially dangerous people from getting a badge. In the past they had problems with verified accounts spreading hate messages like Donald Trump and Twitter still relies on the Twitter Trust & Safety team to do its job. They want losing the verified account badge on Twitter to be a possible punishment because that means losing the security of having a recognized account in the face of parodies and fraud.
