Definition of driver

We explain what they are, what they are for and the most common types of drivers

The operating system is an interface that allows the user to use different computer components in a simple and intuitive way. But the operating system needs to know what components we have, how it works and how it should communicate with and manage them. This is done through the drivers. Here we will explain what a driver is, what it is for and everything you need to know about these computer programs.

What is a driver in computing

Its main function is to establish a user interface for the hardware that has been recently installed. Basically it provides the necessary instructions to the operating system to know how to communicate with this new device.

Modern peripherals do not require a driver to function. We can connect a keyboard or mouse to the computer and start using them. Some may need additional software, acting as a controller, to configure different buttons, parameters, lighting, etc.

Normally the device developer will offer us their own driver. In addition, manufacturers develop drivers for different operating systems, offering more possibilities to the user.

In the past, the drivers came on a CD inside the product box. Few manufacturers often ship a driver CD in the box. Some have opted for a USB stick or for not adding anything and offering the drivers directly on their website. Practically the only ones that add a storage medium with drivers are the motherboard manufacturers.

How drivers are classified

There are mainly two types of drivers that we can find. They are as follows:

  • Generic or universal drivers: Drivers that are installed to make the device work without further ado. Plug & Play devices usually make use of this type of driver.
  • Specific drivers: Drivers that add all the capabilities and operating features of the device. Returning to the Plug & Play device, it may be that through the manufacturer's software and / or driver, new functions are added.

Driver types

  • Sound driver: They are those that allow the sound card to function normally. These are usually installed generically when we install the operating system
  • Of video: They are what allow the graphics card, whether dedicated or integrated, to function properly. Currently for PCs and laptops we only have AMD and NVIDIA as graphics manufacturers
  • Ethernet: The network card is one of those devices that usually needs a driver to work
  • WiFi: In order to use wireless networks we will need a specific driver that enables this technology
  • Bluetooth: Normally the driver for the WiFi card already integrates support for Bluetooth, but this may not be the case and we need a separate driver
  • USB: In modern computers these are installed natively by the operating system. If they are not gaming or advanced devices, they may need software that enables additional functions and does the controller functions.
  • BIOS: Modern motherboards often receive BIOS updates that add enhancements or optimizations

What are drivers for?

The drivers tell the operating system what type of device we have connected to our computer. There are devices that without a driver or controller, would not work properly.

We can find that when we install the operating system, some components do not work or it works wrongly. To correct it we must install the corresponding drivers. The biggest problem is usually that the graphics is not recognized correctly or we are without an internet connection, since the network card does not work without the drivers.

If we do not have internet access, we must install the network card driver that will come in the motherboard box. If you have internet access, it is best to download the necessary driver from the manufacturer's website. There is also software that allows you to detect which drivers are missing (or require updating) and download and install them. Something that we will explain later.

How to know what drivers I have installed on my PC

What the operating system wants is to communicate correctly with the connected device. Windows in this aspect offers it in a fairly simple way. The steps to know if we are missing a driver on our PC are the following:

  1. We right click on the icon Windows
  2. We look for the option Device management
  3. A window opens with all the devices of our team
  4. Those who have a yellow warning triangle, are the drivers that we are missing

Once we know, we can enter the support where the drivers are stored and install the missing ones. We can go to download them to the website of the manufacturer of the device and / or motherboard. There are also tools that detect missing drivers.

How to update drivers in Windows 11

The process is really simple and you just have to follow these steps:

  1. We right click on the icon Windows
  2. We look for the option Device management
  3. A window opens with all the devices of our team
  4. Click on the device of which we want to update the drivers
  5. Now one or more options open
  6. We must do right click on the device of which we want to update the drivers
  7. select Update Driver
  8. In case of not being successful, we recommend that you use the software that we leave you below

How to download the drivers for my pc

If you don't have an average knowledge of computers and hardware, this step can be a bit tricky. Motherboard manufacturers usually offer all the necessary drivers for their product to work perfectly. The same are the manufacturers of graphics cards, peripherals, etc.

In case you want to look for a driver that we are missing or that may have updates, we will always go to the device manufacturer's website. Suppose we want to update the graphics card drivers. We must follow the following steps:

  1. We right click on it windows icon
  2. We look for the option Device management
  3. A window opens with all the devices of our team
  4. Click on Display Adapter, showing us the installed graphics card
  5. It will normally be a NVIDIA or AMD graphics, therefore, we must go to the corresponding manufacturer's website
  6. Once here, we look in the top menu for the drivers section
  7. Now we must introduce our model and download the drivers
  8. Once downloaded, we double click on the downloaded driver and we will give it to next until the end of the process

Note: If you see that the screen flickers during installation, it is completely normal

What is the best driver program

There are many computer programs that allow you to update and install drivers. Normally they are quite simple to use and it is advisable to use them, especially if we have had our computer equipment for a long time. We are going to recommend Driver Booster, a very powerful and simple tool.

Driver Booster

The tool is really paid, but its free version allows you to update the drivers without problems or install the missing ones. The process may take longer or shorter depending on the number of drivers that are missing or out of date.

It has a large library of drivers, which is usually updated with a good periodicity. Driver installation is done in the background, so it's not annoying. For us it is the best solution, because it is simple, fast and very intuitive to use.
