How to disable automatic Windows 10 updates step by step

Microsoft only allows updates to be paused for only a few days. We can from Windows Update pause updates for a maximum of 35 days. Those with Windows 10 Pro, can pause security updates for 30 days and quality and feature updates for up to 365 days.

To be able to suspend the updates under this system, we will need the Build 1903 of Windows 10. Although there is a way that allows to disable the updates permanently. This implies that the updates must be installed manually. To do this, we will disable the automatic updates service.

Steps to disable the automatic update service

  1. We go to the Windows bar and in the search box we write 'services'.
  2. Now the version window opens. We scroll to the end, until we find the services that begin with the letter 'W'. The services are arranged alphabetically. We must seek service Windows Update.
  3. Now we double click on the Windows Update service and the window of Properties: Windows Update (Local Computer)
  4. Inside the tab General, we will see a drop-down menu that indicates Start type, and we put it in Disabled.
  5. Once this is done, click on Apply and then about OK.
  6. We close the window and restart the computer

When we are sure that the updates work, we go to Windows Update and download the updates.

Disable Windows 10 updates using local group policies

The function to disable updates is hidden by default in Windows 10. By means of a few adjustments in the local group policies you can have access to this possibility. This option is only available for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise users. The steps are the following:

  1. In the Windows 10 search engine we enter the text Local Group Policy Editor and we open it
  2. Now we must look for the folder Administrative Templates which is within the section of Equipment setup. We must click on it to expand
  3. We double click on All values and the list of Configure Automatic Updates, where we will double click
  4. Now we choose the option Enabled of the three that we have accessible in the upper left corner

Block updates via WiFi

This method must be said that it only works with laptops and devices that connect without cables. So it is only valid for computers that connect to the internet via WiFi.

Windows 10 implements a method that allows you to limit the amount of download data. This method is intended for those who connect to wireless networks where there is a maximum amount of accessible data, as well as mobile data rates.

To do this, we must activate the metered-use connection system:

  1. Let's go to the WiFi configuration
  2. Click on the Advanced Options
  3. We select the option of metered-use connection
