What you need to know about Apple's M2 chips

For 14 years, Apple teamed up with Intel to build Apple Silicon CPUs, which changed the assembly architecture. It was the fourth time the architecture was changed, and after the break between Apple and Intel, Apple decided to develop them themselves with the M1 chip, of which we will soon see its successor in the form of the Apple M2 chip in the next systems of the manufacturer.

What makes Apple's M2 chip special?

This Apple M2 chip will be based on the ARM architecture, which has the advantage of requiring fewer transistors to perform the same operations as a chip from the Intel x86 family. With this they achieve better energy performance by consuming less which means greater energy efficiency, at a lower price and generating less heat.

The fact that they themselves develop the processor for all their products affects their philosophy of selling software and services in perfect harmony with the hardware they sell. That is, by knowing exactly the processors that all your computers will use, you can optimize the software more efficiently and give that feeling of quality and fluidity with which Apple devices have been so famous.

The transition from Apple Silicon to the M1 began with the 13 Mac Mini, MacBook Air, 24-inch MacBook Pro, 11-inch iMac, 12,9-inch and 2020-inch iPad Pro. this M2 chip. Their mass production began in April and Apple only needs to officially announce these products, probably in a keynote in June or July. But exact specifications or benchmarks are not known, which we will very surely know if they are leaked or a few days after they have been released to the domestic market.

The predecessor, the M1, for reference

It is known that Apple's M1 chip had eight cores, of which four were high-performance and another four were focused on energy efficiency. This M2 would raise it to 16 high-performance cores, keeping the other four. Its integrated GPU would go from seven or eight cores depending on the M1 model to 16 or 32 cores on Apple's M2 chip. It is expected that in later models of the M2 as a supposed M3 they will reach 64 or 128 cores, and that they would arrive at the end of 2021 or already entered the year 2022.

What teams will have the M2?

It is not known exactly what computer models the M2 will be released on. But it is to be expected that the flagship laptop and desktop models that require some renovation. One of those is expected to be the 16-inch MacBook Pros, but nothing is confirmed or official.

But we can hope that by doing so, Apple will make all of their software fully compatible with the M2 chip. An example of this would be the audio format without loss of quality, which would be a delight for music lovers unless it is not compatible with their AirPods, not even the AirPods Pro, due to the loss of quality of wireless broadcasts. They would also make the MacBook and iMac try to stay at the forefront of demanding games, which although they are few, many players appreciate being able to play new innovations on their Apple terminals.

We can expect all this for the terminals that arrive in July or in the autumn month.
