Sakurai has explained how to play Steve from Minecraft in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. He is one of the most complex characters to date, if not the most.

How to have Steve from Minecraft in Super Smash Bros Ultimate

The first thing we need, of course, is a copy of Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. Additionally to have Steve from Minecraft we will need the 'Fighters Pass 2' or buy the individual package in which Steve is included. This package is the 'Applicant Package 7' that will be available in the eShop.

It can be obtained from October 14 with the 'Applicant Pack 7' for 5.99 euros. Those who have the 'Fighter Pass 2' will receive it the same day and will also include the character Min Min from ARMS. Later, another four new fighters will arrive in the coming months.

What's in the Minecraft Steve Bundle for Super Smash Bros Ultimate

  • The controllable character Steve with eight different costumes: three of them in his male version, three of them in his female version called Alex, a zombie, and an Enderman
  • Minecraft Biome Scenario
  • 7 songs from different Minecraft games like Minecraft Earth y Minecraft Dungeons, which can be reproduced in the Minecraft scenario or in the Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Grand Battlefield and Final Destination scenarios.
  • 9 additional spirits to collect in Spirits mode, based on different Minecraft characters

How to control Steve from Minecraft

As Masahiro Sakurai has shown, the way to play with Steve from Minecraft in Super Smash Bros Ultimate is in the management of resources and the durability of his tools. This is taken from resource management in Minecraft itself.

Steve has a meter above his health gauge that indicates the proportion of materials he has. They can be wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond, red stone

Normal attacks

Steve attacks with the sword. If we hold down A, we can attack repeatedly while moving like Mega Man, and jump. If we use superior attack, Steve will use his ax, and like the normal attack, if we keep it he will repeat attacks and we can move.

The pickaxe will use it when doing aerial side attacks and can keep attacking like sword and ax. One quality of the pickaxe is that its lateral frontal attack has a meteoric effect that knocks enemies down. Airstrike back does more damage and has more throwing effect.

Keep in mind that as in Minecraft, Steve's weapons and tools in Super Smash Bros can be broken. If it breaks, we will attack with our fists, which have less attack and launch power. The tools can be made of Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond. Gold weapons have lower durability.

The bottom attack uses the Flint and Tinder Chipper to create a fire. It has gravity and can hit enemies trying to rejoin the stage and avoid projectiles. The downward airstrike creates an iron anvil that behaves like Kirby's inferior special attack, but we can jump out of it and it consumes an iron unit from Steve. The grip uses a fishing rod for long reach, and while the rest of the casts casts the opponent, the lower one creates another iron anvil that also consumes an iron unit.

Smash upwards places a block of magma that lasts a few seconds. Down Smash places lava cubes left and right, with a lot of horizontal throw.

Button B: Mine, Craft

Steve from Minecraft has several uses for his normal special attack, making him one of the most complex characters to play in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. This special is used differently depending on where Steve is located:

  • On the floor: Steve can mine materials. The materials that appear and the tool we use will depend on where we excavate, so there will be phases that have more iron, others that have more wood. In Omega, Final Destination or Battlefield scenarios that are used in competitive, there will be no chance and the materials will have a predetermined order. The speed at which we dig and the materials we remove will depend on the material of our tool.
  • Next to a work table: At the beginning of each fight, a workbench will appear next to our starting point. The table can be restored after a while if it breaks. If we press the shield button the B button, we will call the work table, ideal in large stages such as the Temple of Palutena. By pressing button B, we will increase the quality of our tools to the highest possible quality if we have sufficient materials or we will restore their durability. All tools upload to their best material at once.
  • In the air: Create a block. Use the softest materials first and then the most resistant, and if we hold down, we will create them in a chain. If we get on a block, it will break faster than normal. They can be used to gain altitude, block projectiles, or prevent enemies from rejoining the stage. This move uses dirt, sand, stone, and iron, in order from least to greatest durability.

Side Steer Button B - Wagon

We will need an iron unit to create the wagon, and materials to build the rails. If we have redstone or gold, we will create propelled rails that will give us more speed and we can climb slopes. The wagon can catch rivals to throw them off the stage.

Top Direction Button B: Elite Wings

Steve dons the Elytra, jumps, and uses a rocket to propel himself and glide. We can only harm enemies with this ability at the beginning when we use the rocket. We must be careful not to propel ourselves little or go very vertically so as not to fall. No materials are needed to use Elytra.

Bottom Direction Button B: Dynamite

Use poor quality materials to create a block of dynamite. If we hit it, it may explode in a short time. If we have redstone, we can create a circuit with a pressure trigger that we or our enemies can activate. It can be used as a trap, but you have to be careful because dynamite can also harm us. We can use the wagon to activate the pressure plate.

Final Smash: Explosive House

Minecraft Steve's Final Smash is based on building a house full of explosives to blow it up. When we press B, Steve will put a giant piston that will hit the enemies he hits, and will send one to the exploding house to be at the mercy of various explosives, zombies and Creepers.

Resource management

We will have a maximum of resources that we can carry, and if we take materials with a full meter, we will be discarding materials that we have collected before. Iron is the only material used in more than one technique, and we can only carry up to eight pieces. Gold and diamonds are shown in separate indicators and if they flash, we can create tools from that material.

Minecraft World Scenario for Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Steve from Minecraft also gives us a Super Smash Bros Ultimate stage to play on. This scenario varies between six different biomes, chosen each time we enter. Biome blocks can be broken, but the blocks will not regenerate. The scenarios with trees (Birch, savanna and taiga) have hidden platforms if we break the trees. All biomes have blocks placed on the ground so that we can all get the same materials.

  • Plain
  • Birch
  • African
  • Taiga
  • Snowy tundra, which despite not having trees, has two platforms
  • Rocky shore
