What is the Polling Rate

We explain what the Polling Rate is and what it is for in keyboards and mice, as well as the possible inconveniences that it can present

Within the world of computing there are a lot of different terms that are important to know. One of the most important keyboard and mouse parameters is the Polling Rate. This parameter tells us how often the mouse or keyboard sends information to the computer.

What is the Polling Rate

It is the number of times per second that a keyboard or mouse sends information to the computer's processor. This parameter is usually indicated in hertz (Hz).

All the actions that we perform on a keyboard (keystrokes) or on a mouse (keystrokes and movement) must be sent to the processor. The higher the polling rate, the less time information is sent to the processor.

If the polling rate is low, the mouse can lose a large number of frames in the game, thus generating low precision. In case of having a high polling rate, the dropout is lower and the precision is higher. It therefore translates into a more responsive pointer response.

There are currently four more or less common Polling Rate values. These are:

Polling RateEquivalence in time
125 Hz8 milliseconds
250 Hz4 milliseconds
500 Hz2 milliseconds
1000 Hz1 millisecond

What is the Polling Rate for

The main function is to send information to the processor on a regular basis. The greater amount of information we send to the processor, the greater the precision of the action.

Where else we can notice the Polling Rate is in video games. When we are playing what we are interested in is that the information reaches the processor as quickly as possible. In the end, this will be in charge of communicating with the graphics card so that the movement is reflected on the screen.

Thus the polling rate can be decisive in video games, especially in competitive games. In competitive games, great precision is required, which is obtained by a high frequency in the Polling Rate.

A high polling rate also has its trade-off. Having a high Polling Rate can put a lot of stress on the processor. The higher the polling rate, the more work the processor has to do.

On modern multi-core processors there should be no impact on system performance. But on low-core processors, there could be loss of tracking or reduced game performance.

Polling Rate TEST Online

If you don't know exactly what poll rate has your mouse, we recommend that you do an online test. With this polling rate test you can learn a little more and know exactly what the results of your mouse are in real time.

To do this, simply use the link that we leave you below, click on STAR TEST and move the mouse through the white box, at that moment the mouse probe rates will be generated in real time, and you will also have an average that you can consult.
