What is resolution and which are the most used

The resolution of a screen or monitor is a way of saying the image size it can project. An image on any screen is formed from individual blocks that project red, green, or blue light to form an image transmitted by a signal.

Image size, or resolution, is calculated by counting the pixels in both a horizontal line of the image and the pixels in a vertical line. A larger screen does not imply a higher resolution or image quality, but a higher resolution usually implies a larger size due to the physical limitations of the pixels.

Resolution is not synonymous with image quality

There is a widespread error among the less said with technology that the higher the resolution, the higher the image quality. This is totally untrue. A 1080P resolution screen can give a higher image quality than one of resolution 2k. The quality depends on the quality of the screen to offer better colors, contrast, color balance, image fluency, frames, color gamut ...

The most modern screens have a series of features that make them more suitable for depending on what use. There are those that are ideal for watching movies, as they are focused on resolution, vividness of colors and image definition, those focused on their use of office automation of a moderate size and designed to exert the least impact on the eyes, and the screens for gaming focused on offering a higher image speed.

Resolution types

There are many types of resolution, but generally an attempt is made to go towards the more common standards because a resolution implies supporting it with an interface profile and size that requires a development effort. The most common resolutions tend to go side by side with screen sizes that are ideal for home users or that have a resolution that justifies the increase in image quality for experiences such as home theater, or when gaming technology is able to support it at stable frame rate.

Here are the most common resolutions today:

SD resolution

Today the SD resolution o Standard Definition is considered low resolution, and the minimum size that any video file usually has to save space. It is made up of 640 x 480 pixels.

HD resolution

This 1.280 x 720 pixel resolution is known as High Definition, 720p o HD resolution. Almost any television or screen today, no matter how low-end, reaches this resolution. It is usually the ideal size for secondary computer screens, intended to hold additional information or play a video in the background.

Full HD Resolution

The word Full HD o 1080p, at the resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 pixels. It is the minimum resolution and size that the main screen of your computer or the television in your living room should have.

QHD resolution

A resolution of 2.560 x 1.440 pixels, very obsolete and difficult to implement. Almost no screen supports it and there are hardly any screens of that size. It was presented as a somewhat higher resolution than 1080p, but it quickly surpassed 4K resolution.

Resolution 4K

After 1080p, the next step in high definition resolution is 4K, Ultra High Definition or UHD resolution. Its size is 3.840 x 2.160 pixels, and its commercial name 4K is given because it almost reaches 4.000 pixels on a horizontal line. Today, this resolution is the resolution at which many Blu_Rays of movies are being edited and it is expected that in the near future graphics cards will be able to process this resolution at 60 frames per second in a stable manner. It is the maximum resolution reached by the Xbox series X and PlayStation 5 consoles, and they depend on the game allowing it.

Resolution 8k

4K resolution has not yet been standardized at the domestic level, but 8K resolution screens are already being launched, which are 7.680 × 4.320 pixels. Again, its 8K trade name is because the number of pixels in a single horizontal line almost reaches 8.000 pixels. For now, the 8K resolution is made only for the most demanding and expensive home theater, with movies that can weigh hundreds of GB in weight.

It is a resolution that is not within the reach of gaming at the domestic level. No current console, be it PlayStation 5 or Xbox series X reaches this resolution, and it is not certain that their successors will.

Dynamic resolution

The word dynamic resolution a when an image broadcast to a screen, be it a YouTube video or a video game, changes the native resolution at which the image is projected and sent to the screen to prioritize image fluency stability.

In the case of YouTube videos, it is used when we have set the automatic resolution option and the bandwidth that our device receives is not enough to load content in high definition. In the case of video games, it happens when the console, generally in the case of Xbox One and PlayStation 4, cannot produce such a large image with as many light and shadow effects in real time as the game demands.

What is the resolution of a mobile phone?

The resolution of a mobile phone depends on the manufacturer's screen size and can vary greatly. Some of the most common are HD+ (720x1280 pixels), Full HD+ (1080x1920 pixels) and WQHD+ (1440 x 2560 pixels). They are resolutions comparable to those of screens, televisions and monitors, but oriented vertically.

How do you read the screen resolution?

Screen resolution indicates the number of vertical pixels, per row and column. For example, in the resolution 1920 x 1080, it indicates that we have 1920 columns of pixels, and 1080 rows of pixels that will give us an image at that resolution.

Which TV has the best resolution?

8K resolution televisions are the commercial models with the highest resolution on the market. There are televisions with much higher resolution, but they are television models tailored to the user.

How do I know the resolution of my phone?

To find out what resolution your Android phone uses, go to the Settings application, and in the “About my Phone” section, there is the “screen resolution” section, which will give the resolution that your mobile uses. This will allow you to know the exact size and proportion of your screen, in case you want to design a wallpaper that fits the mobile screen.

How to change my screen resolution?

To change the Windows screen resolution, go to Display Settings, choose the display you want to change, and choose the desired resolution. The operating system has a series of compatible resolutions, so there will be certain proportions and resolutions that are not compatible, and in many cases the monitor will notify you which resolution is optimal for it. Having more resolution will not improve image quality if the monitor or screen is not of said resolution.
