What is a UPS

Uninterruptible Power Systems or UPS allow you to continue using a computer equipment when there is a voltage drop in the network

All computer components require electricity to function. In Spain, the supply is very good, and outages are rare; they are usually for maintenance. However, electricity is not so stable everywhere in the world. To prevent data loss or damage to components, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are used.

What is a UPS

It is a device that stores energy and allows an electronic device to remain powered for a certain period of time . Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) in computing are used to prevent data loss or corruption and damage to equipment. A UPS can supply power for a specific duration , determined by the capacity of its internal batteries.

Internally, a UPS, as we said, has a battery and a series of electronic circuits. The batteries are charged from the home or local electrical network through a circuit that converts it from alternating to continuous. If there is a power outage, there is another circuit that turns it into AC at the appropriate frequency.

The simplest UPS systems are usually just backup power and little else. A quality UPS can perform other, potentially useful functions. UPS systems can protect equipment against power surges or eliminate voltage noise.

Under no circumstances will a UPS protect the system from lightning strikes in storms or sustained peaks over time.

Some modern UPSs add the filtering option for internet connections. Note that this causes a loss in the signal, reducing the speed of the connection. There are also those with USB ports to power smartphones, tablets, etc.

What is a UPS for

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) serve as a backup during power outages . They allow us to use computer equipment, save vital information, and shut down the system for a short period. These devices are not designed to provide power for extended periods.

Another use of UPS systems is to prevent system outages caused by small , transient voltage drops . Some even have the capacity to absorb minor voltage surges.

Unfortunately, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) do not protect against prolonged power surges, only transient ones (lasting a few milliseconds). If lightning strikes our electrical grid, the UPS will do nothing, as it cannot absorb that much power.

In short, a UPS only serves to prevent the loss of critical data when there is a power outage . It can protect against micro-outages or small power surges, but little else.
