What are mouse DPIs

We explain what the DPIs of gaming mice are and what they are for

One of the most important peripherals we use every day is the mouse. This device is essential to interact with our computer equipment. In addition, it has evolved a lot, existing different solutions according to the needs of the user, being able to find mice for gaming, for designers, etc. One of the most important parameters of a mouse is the DPI and we are going to explain what it is and what it is for.

What are IPR

They are the acronyms of «Dot Per Inch», which translated means "dots per inch«, in Spanish. Basically the DPI of the mouse tells us the resolution of a mouse. Indicates the number of pixels (dots) that the mouse sensor supports scrolling in one inch of length.

Usually this parameter is indicated as DPI, although we can also see it in PPPs when the specifications are in Spanish. It is not the most common, but some stores and manufacturers do it with products that they put on the market in Spain and Latin America.

An 800 DPI mouse means that an inch scrolling of the mouse will result in a cursor scrolling of 1600 pixels on the screen. A 2000 DPI mouse will result in a 2000 pixel cursor shift.

Note that the amount of DPI does not mean that one mouse is better or worse than another. The only thing that tells us is the ability to move the cursor on our screen in the margin of 1 inch. The higher the dots per inch value, the greater the offset in pixels per inch.

Gaming mice usually allow adjust DPI range. The manufacturer shows us the minimum and maximum dots per inch. Additionally, they indicate the steps or the adjustment level. Some mice allow steps of 1 DPI and others allow steps of 100 DPI. Others allow you to adjust it to the exact settings that we want in different interchangeable profiles through the official drievrs or the DPI change button that many mice have today.

What are IPRs for

It tells us how fast we can move the mouse cursor on the screen in a physical movement of the mouse. The fact that a mouse offers more "Dots Per Inch" than another does not indicate better quality, but rather that in the same physical space the movement will be greater.

A high DPI value can be useful in different areas. For example, if we have a setup with a screen with 4K resolution, a mouse with a high dots per inch value is needed. A 4K display has four times as many pixels as a 1080p display, which means that the cursor scrolling will be four times less. So the 800 DPI offset will be the same, but visually less.

In gaming, a relatively lower DPI is usually required. For shooter games, it is usually recommended to use between 500 DPI and 1500 DPI for a 1080p resolution. Although, as always, it depends on the user's needs.
