Types of led screens: uses and characteristics

We see the different types of LED screens that you can find in your daily life and their main characteristics

Outdoor LED screens are becoming more and more common on the facades of shops and large surfaces. They are characterized by showing more information and advertising that can be displayed even at great distances. Here we will explain the different types of LED screens that exist and the main characteristics. But the most interesting thing is that they can be made to measure.

What is an LED screen

Electronic device made up of a large number of LEDs that allow users to display data, information, images, video, etc. They are based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

These types of screens have nothing to be confused with LCD screens or those of plate with LED backlighting used in monitors, televisions and screens of portable computers.

LED displays are based on pixels that can be monochromatic (single-color LEDs), bicolor (two types of LED colors) or polychromatic based on RGB LEDs (they offer red, green and blue colors). These LEDs make up pixels that allow characters, texts, images and even video to be formed, depending on the type of screen.

Main uses

Currently they are used mainly in advertising because of the versatility they offer. They allow you to display information quickly, easy to replace and attractive to viewers. Its management can be centralized or remotely.

This type of panel has evolved into giant screens with high resolution polychromatic LED technology. These allow you to reproduce full color video in large events with very good image quality.

Giant LED screens

They are a type of modular screens that facilitate installation, maintenance and transport. They are based on what is called a 'Module' or 'Cabinet, which can be put together to create larger systems.

The main characteristics of these LED panels are: the distance between pixels that is measured in mm, the type of LED that can be DIP (Direct In-Line Package) or SMD (Surface Mounted Diode), the resolution, the maximum consumption, the protection against the elements and the quality of LEDs.

Giant outdoor LED screens

These types of giant LED screens are very similar to the previous ones, but with greater protection against the elements. They require protection against heat and cold, dust, wind, and rain. These panels usually have a degree of protection on the front and another on the back.

Regarding resolution, it is measured by the distance between its pixels, normally measured in millimeters.

Those that are of the 'real pixel' type (a red led, a blue led and a green led), where the three LEDs make up each pixel. The number of pixels spans both the horizontal and vertical length.

Then we have the virtual pixel technology (two red, one blue and one green), where each pixel is made up of four LEDs. This technology enables a higher pixel density to be created, since pixels between pixel centers are perceived by the human eye.

They can be seen outdoors of large surfaces, concerts in the open and outdoor events.

Monochromatic, bi-color or tri-color LED displays

These displays are primarily intended to display common alphanumeric characters. Some support displaying graphics, but in a very limited way.

Normally they are usually single-color LEDs, but there are two-color or tricolor LEDs. They allow you to display text, numbers and simple low resolution graphics. They support installation both indoors and outdoors.

They are usually used for signage and information. They are common in train and subway stations.
