What is augmented reality and how can it revolutionize the metaverse?

The concept of Augmented Reality is very confused with that of Virtue Reality. Now that the large companies in the industry have focused on the concept of online worlds that act as a bridge between people, companies and other entities, it is necessary to make clear the difference between these two concepts, and how Augmented Reality promises to be an alternative more open to the metaverse that companies like meta or Microsoft promote.

Difference between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality

The difference between these two concepts lies in how reality alters on its behalf. Virtual Reality are the helmets that surround our eyes and ears to get into our own virtual world. In Augmented Reality, through special glasses or devices such as mobile phones, we see the real world to which elements have been added with which to interact or observe.

A quick example is seeing the PlayStation VR, the virtual reality glasses that surround us in games that simulate a virtual world. On the other hand, the Augmented Reality of Pokémon Go allowed us to see Pokémon through the screen of our mobile.

This difference makes Augmented Reality a much more sociable technology and a much more open field of experimentation. A future is coming in which we will see the augmented reality and industry 4.0 united to make remote workspaces more efficient, with virtual interactive classes and more concepts that we cannot imagine today, but that when they arrive will seem like the logical revolution of this technology.

Beginnings of Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality has been perfected for decades, beginning its use in video games and desktop applications. Invizimals for the PlayStation Portable was one of the first massive games that decided to be based on this technology and was capable of detecting the movement and position of the player, but it needed to always have a mark visible to calculate the distance. Even the Nintendo 3DS came standard with Augmented Reality games using cards as positional and directional reference cards, which were impressive but you could see the trick when you moved the reference card or covered it.

Desktop applications such as CamLab on Mac allow you to detect the user and put an interactive background on them, but this simply detected color changes and reacted to them. Nowadays, Augmented Reality allows detecting objects in three dimensions, even in outdoor spaces such as scans of important places that Pokémon Go asks users to do as goals.

It must be seen that the application in games of Augmented Reality is the prelude to its business use and of the highest level, since they will be the ones that will ask and demand the most from a technology that if it turns out well, it may mean a revolution in leisure and workspaces. And now with the emphasis and interest shown by metaverses, Augmented Reality is about to star in another revolution.

Future uses of Augmented Reality

Taking into account that augmented reality consists of giving more information to the real world through glasses or special visors, from the outset there are many applications that can be used. In workplaces that require specialized equipment and zone training, an Augmented Reality headset can support new and veteran workers with information about work zones and equipment, so they don't always have to consult supervisors.

Fashion is another element that is expected to gain a lot with the growth of Augmented reality and applications of the metaverse type. There is a lot of interest in offering virtual clothes that can only be seen through augmented reality viewers, even linked to the NFTs system to validate clothes and have them crash-proof from temporary or permanent servers, so that users do not feel that they are losing their goods. virtual.

In education, Augmented Reality promises advances that, if implemented in a generalized way, would make classes more interactive and would leave traditional textbooks in the background. Possibilities of education through Augmented Reality are being explored to show animals in biology classes, and even battles and areas of past times in history classes to give greater context to the subject taught.
