List of video games with benchmark

It is good that when we buy a new computer we put it to the test, to verify that everything works normally. Many of the channel's followers ask us what tools we use to test the hardware. Most of the synthetic software are paid and have a considerable price, even for a simple test. But we can also do it with our games, the ones we have purchased on Steam, Uplay, Origin, Epic Games Store or wherever. Well, we have prepared a list of video games with benchmarks, the API they use and a series of interesting data about them.

What are the existing APIs and their most basic features?

DirectX 11

It is a low-level API developed by Microsoft specifically for video games and multimedia content, such as videos. It is currently the most popular in the video game industry, although it is transitioning to new APIs.

The first version of DX11 was released on October 22, 2009 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. The most recent version of this API is DirectX 11.3 which was released on July 29, 2015. It was released with support for Xbox One, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016.

DirectX 12

To adapt to the new times, Microsoft on July 29, 2015 announced this new API. It was officially launched on the same day as DirectX 11.3 and also for Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016. Its implementation in the video game industry is still minimal and it is having a hard time getting started.

On March 20, 2017, this API was updated to add support for implementing depth limit tests and programmable MSAA for Windows 10. On October 2, 2018, support for DirectX RayTracing (real-time light ray traces) was implemented.

OpenGL

La free version of multilanguage API for 2D and 3D graphics applications. This interface has more than 250 different functions that allows creating complex three-dimensional scenes using simple geometric functions such as points, lines and triangles. It was developed by Silicon Graphics Inc in 1992 and is widely used in CAD, virtual reality, scientific representation, information visualization, and flight simulation. It is used in the development of independent video games, especially, being quite rare in Triple A games.

It was March 11, 2010 that OpenGL 4.0 was released. Shading phases were implemented that allow the graph to download the geometric tessellation to the processor. Allows separation of texture state and texture data. They implement performance improvements, such as instance geometry shaders, array instances, and a new timer query.

Its last update was on August 11, 2014, arriving OpenGL 4.5, integrating Direct State Access, optimization of the multithreaded system, improvements for WebGL and shading compatibility.

Volcano

This latest API for 3D graphics is one of the most recent, developed by Khronos Group and presented for the first time at GDC 2015. It is characterized, among other things, by being based on Mantle, an open source API developed by AMD. This is the main reason why AMD graphics cards benefit from games that use this API.

As its main features, it is specially designed for high-end graphics cards and smartphone graphics hardware. It is based on global stateless objects. The different states are located in a command buffer. Provides explicit control over memory management and timing. It has unified management over the compute cores and graphics shaders.
