ASUS History

Asus is the colloquial name for ASUSTeK Computer Inc., a Taiwanese company that manufactures electronic devices, components and smartphones. It was founded in Taipei in 1989 by TH Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh and MT Liao, who had previously worked at Acer as hardware engineers.

During 1984 Intel was the main supplier of processors to companies like IBM. Taiwanese companies had to wait approximately six months from when IBM received their engineering prototypes to have theirs. Asus created a prototype motherboard to use an Intel 486 CPU, created blindly without access to the actual processor. When Asus approached Intel to request a processor to test, Intel had a problem with its own motherboard for the 486. Asus fixed Intel's problem and the Asus motherboard was seen to work correctly without any further modifications. This caused Asus to begin receiving engineering samples from Intel before its competitors.

In September 2005, Asus released the first PhysX accelerator card. In December of that same year, they entered the LCD television market with the TLW32001. On March 9, 2006, they were confirmed as one of the manufacturers of the first Microsoft Origami models, along with Samsung and Founder Technology.

In January 2008, Asus began a restructuring of its operations, and was divided into three independent companies. The first was Asus, which was focused on manufacturing brand-name computers and electronic products; the second was Pegatron, focused on the manufacture of motherboards and OEM components, and which was spun off in June 2010; and finally there is Unihan Corporation, focused on the manufacture of products outside the world of computing.

During the month of April 2019, they announced that they would abandon the tablet market, because they considered it an unprofitable market.

Asus RoG Ally

As part of their Asus RoG range, in 2023 they launched the Asus Rog ally, a portable mini-PC with gaming features designed to imitate the controls of a portable console such as the Nintendo Switch, the PS Vita, or the Steam Deck.

This portable console simulation uses a version of Windows 11, and at the hardware level it uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 APU designed for better performance in a portable form factor. Compared to the Steam Deck, it has higher resolution and frame-per-second performance, as well as not requiring games to be verified for it, but its battery life is shorter and it is not as energy efficient in games that use DirectX 11 or former.
