Project to optimize an old computer for STORJ.

Dear friends, I hope you help me to optimize a disused computer (but in good condition) to see if I can get some fights with the topic that Marco Antonio from STORJ mentioned. I start by putting the characteristics of the equipment and my doubts about the possible optimization.

* MOTHERBOARD: P5SD2-VM (LGA 775, FSB 1066 OC/800/533 MHz, 2 DDR2 667/533 SUPPORTS, 1 PCI-EX16, 1 PCI-EX1, 2PCI, 2X SATA2 (RAID 0 AND RAID 1 FUNCTION).

* MEMORIES: KINGSTONE 2X DDR2 2GB 667MHz.

* PROCESSOR: PENTIUM D 930 AT 3MHz (4M CACHE, 800 MHz FSB) OR PENTIUM DUAL CORE 4400 AT 2.00GHz (2M CACHE, 800 MHz FSB)

*HDD: 500GB.

* POWER SUPPLY: 550W GENERIC.

My doubts are:

- Which of the 2 processors do I use?
- Taking into account that the motherboard only has 2 sata2, am I interested in getting a PCI-E to Sata3 adapter with 4 or 8 outputs? did it happen with the 8?
- Maximum capacity of the HDD (I say this because there are old computers (like this one) that do not support HDDs greater than 2 or 4 Teras.).

Anyway, I'm sure I left something out.

Thank you in advance for the help that the members of the FORUM can give me.

PS: Friend Roberto, surely you see the topic before Marco Antonio and could you ask him about those 775 that he offered in one of the direct ones on Sundays?
I am from Seville and I have no problem paying for the shipment. I am currently using a Q8300 on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L.

I join the thread, I have a couple of abandoned computers and I would like to know if this is entirely profitable to start them up. Regarding your question about the processor, I would use the dual core, although power is not something that matters most in a project like this (or so I think). The speed of the sata port if I think it would influence and a PCI card would not hurt to correct it.

Thanks Fran, I have seen PCI-E to SATA3 adapters with 2, 4, 6 and 8 SATA3 outputs.
With the one with 2 outputs, I would already take advantage of it (since it would go from 2 SATA2 to 2SATA3), but the question is whether with 6 or 8 it would happen.

It depends on how many hard drives you are going to use in that computer, if you will add more in the future, etc. As I say, what best suits your need.

My intention is to add as many disks as possible since, the more capacity available for STORJ; more charges...

The most logical thing would be maximum space per unit and not so much the number of units (unless you already have them and are going to reuse them), in your case with a generic font even more.

If you try something see me telling how it is.

I have looked at the comments of people who have bought various PciE to Sata3 adapters and I have ended up quite uneasy about their reliability.

And now I wonder... Wouldn't a motherboard with Sata3 be better (Obviously the 775 and its motherboard would no longer work for me)?

I have assembled one with a dell optiplex c200 (pentium d 3.ghz, 2gbram, win10 64) hdd1 ssd 128gb hdd2 seagate 8tb 7200rpm and for now it works, later on I will replace it with something that consumes less and makes less noise.

for now it has been 20 days uninterrupted and it holds up because of how old the machine is

on previous 2gb ddr2 at 533, ram usage is at 43%
pentium D at 3.00ghz with a constant load of between 45-60%
the network use of the machine according to windows is 18Mbps
that if the noise of the heatsink and the power supply for more than I have done the maintenance is something annoying

later I will change the machine for an athlon 200ge, 8gb ram, gigabyte ga-320m-s2h board
the board, cpu, ram and box + source cost me about 165. I would re-use the same hard drives and the nvdia 710 as dedicated graphics

today I tried it with another machine with coreduo (1gen) at 2.2 and 2gb of ram (all soldered), hdd 1tb 5200 rpm, with ubuntu 16, there was no way to do the identity

Txema friend, in your Pentium D configuration (I guess it's the 930) the noise of the heatsink is normal because it's a 2 core/2 thread processor and it gets very hot.
The 2gb is it 1 module of 2gb or 2 modules of 1gb? Even if there were 2 modules of 1gb to take advantage of the Dual Channel, I see it as insufficient for a Windows 10.

Hello Antonio
if it's a pentium d 930 (try to put an e8400 on it, but it wouldn't boot) with a 1x1gb configuration (the 2x2gb ones didn't boot the pc)
this machine runs on a 128gb kingston ssd for the operating system; windows 10 x64 1909, winrar, storenode, notepad++, Duc noip and nvidia drivers for gt710 graphics

average cpu usage is between 24-32% and ram 0.8/2gb ram

later I will change it for an athlon 200ge, a gigabyte a320m, 8 gb ddr4 and a box + source. I will reuse the ssd and hdd.
With this change I would reduce the heat of the equipment and the noise, I will also reduce the electrical consumption to about 75w approx.

Good evening. I am writing to see if someone can clarify this for me.
To begin with, I know very little about hardware, but on this subject, 0 hahaha.

I had thought to buy a very basic equipment and put it to work, but I have many doubts:
1) Is there a site or forum in Spanish that indicates what steps must be done to collect? As far as I know, you charge in a currency that you can then exchange for bitcoins or something like that....
2) After watching the videos from Hardwaresfera, he clarified that the best thing to do is to mount a PC with a 2 tb ssd+ hdd (from that amount of storage on a hard drive it wasn't worth much, I think). My question is, if I put 4 hdds of 2 tb each in the same computer, do I get more money than mounting a single 8tb HDD?
The equipment that I want to mount is the following:
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M S2H
- Processor: AMD Athlon 200GE 3.2GHz Socket AM4
- Ram memory: 2x Crucial DDR4 2400 PC4-19200 4GB CL17 RAM (total 8 gb)
- hdd hard drive: Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" 2TB SATA 3
- PSU: Corsair VS450 450W 80 Plus White

*Is it worth investing in a PC like this? it comes out about 250 euros
* For that processor it is not necessary to update the bios beforehand, right?
* I have put two ram modules to have a total of 8 in dual channel, but I don't know if it will be necessary.

I hope you help me a little.

Thanks to all colleagues.

hello good txoli

To see if I can help you

1 I have not found any forum in Spanish, nor is it that I have broken my head. from what I know and I understand they pay you with the token and then you sell the token

2 When I installed it, it didn't give me the option to select a second hard drive (I have two 8tb hard drives, and it only lets me select one) another thing is in disk management, to make a 16tb distributed drive (that's what I did)
- It depends on the price that you get, 4 2tb disks would be worth about 240e (round numbers), and an 8tb disk would be worth about 230e. that to your liking
3 it seems that the budget was taken from ¨torotocho¨ (the configuration sounds familiar to me) it is well priced but it can be adjusted more, your node will not be active all the time, there will be days that you will not do anything (it happens to me)
If you have an older computer, try it if you can (have a survey that only works on windows 10 x64) and see how it goes. that before spending 250 euros, I have something I thought for 170e (re taking advantage of the hdds and graphics of the current one that acts as a node

Let's see if Marcos makes the video and clears up our doubts.
This weekend I am going to try to put a second node using a laptop and something anti-guillo of i7 2gen

In the video that I put below, he explains the issue of xk, a hard drive greater than 2 tb is not worth it. It's from the hardwaresphere channel. Speak a little from:
1:06:17

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJd-0uCrvGM

One little thing that I have in doubt is the following: At home I have contracted 120 megabytes of fiber optics. If I put the node both in download and upload to the maximum, will I have connection problems in other PCs at home, both to browse, play or watch Netflix on TV?

I'm sorry to be so heavy, and I hope that all these doubts clarify more than one 🙂
