They install a passive heatsink to an AMD RX 470 and this achieves a reduction in temperature and a performance improvement.
One of the main problems with AMD graphics cards is the temperatures, which are quite high, despite the arrival of the new Crimson ReLive drivers. The WCCFTECH medium wanted to experiment and have mounted a passive heatsink to a VisionTek Radeon RX 470 4GB graphics card. Through some small modifications they have installed the Arctic Accelero S3 heatsink on this graphics card. Without any good you might think that the operation would not be good, on the contrary, since it would have worked better than with the original heatsink.
AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards self-regulate according to the installed heatsink and the temperature they reach, increasing or decreasing the frequency, depending on the temperature. It is clear that a graphics card with a customized heatsink for each brand will always be better than the stock heatsink, which, like the one offered for processors, is usually the least fair and dissipates heat less efficiently, even reaching 5ºC more in a stock heatsink than one customized by each of the brands.
Officially, the Artic Accelero S3 does not support the RX 470, because of the TDP, which happens a lot, but in WCCFTECH they wanted to experiment and see what would happen if they installed said heatsink on this graph. In addition, we cannot have just any cheap tower, we would need a quality tower with a high quality and powerful air flow or an open type chassis (or live in a place where it is cold and not have the heating on).
The Artic Accelero S3 is a heatsink that supports a maximum TDP of 135W, while the RX 470 graphics card has a TDP of 120W. This solution now at this time and with a well-cooled chassis, should not give excessive problems, however, we do not recommend this solution in Spain, during the summer period, because we can safely stay without a graphics card.
The highlight, as we can see in the video, is that the performance is improved, contrary to what we might think, since among other things a reduction in temperature of 5ºC is achieved, something more normal in graphics with custom heatsink by the distributors of these GPUs. Thanks to this system, the Boost mode is active for longer, which allows the GPU to work at the highest possible frequency, obtaining up to 15fps of improvement in games. We reiterate that this solution, if you want to adopt it, must be in a well-cooled quality tower and we do not know in summer, how you can respond.
