Delid, a practice not suitable for everyone, which leaves Intel and AMD processors without warranty

The delid or remove the metal protection that covers the silicon where the cores are, eliminates the warranty of the processor manufacturer, either Intel or AMD and if the processor is damaged, we will be left without.

It has become fashionable to talk about anything and do the most absurd tutorials, practices that are not for all audiences. The last one has been to incite users to delve into the processors, especially since the arrival of the Intel i7 7700K, which has certain temperature problems, well certain, it heats up that is pleasant or for the AMD Ryzen and improve its temperature. This delid practice involves removing the HIS that covers the processor chip and is a very complex and delicate practice, not suitable for all users.

This practice has good things, since it allows to reduce the temperature of the processor by about 10ºC on average, when we change the internal thermal paste that improves the contact surface between the silicon of the cores and the metal surface that protects it. This is mainly done by expert overclockers, with years of experience, such as der8auer, who we talk about a lot on the web because he does a lot of delids. But this practice has a serious risk, breaking the processor and losing money, because neither Intel nor AMD take charge of the processors that are subjected to this practice and suffer damage.

What can go wrong? The first thing is that the blade escapes and we scratch the processor chip, which would damage it and make it useless and therefore, we would lose the money invested in the processor. The second damage would be to the PCB or board where it is integrated, which could be damaged if we do not do it properly and could generate performance problems. The processor chip can be accompanied by other small components, such as resistors, solid state capacitors or others and if we damage them, we could also damage the processor.

All this is in the case that the metal cover is not directly soldered to the silicon chip, as it happens in many processors. If this is so and we do not know it, it could cause the processor to break when pulling the cover and in this case the metal package must be heated in a very specific way, something that makes this practice even more difficult. This is why if we are not completely sure, we do not know how to do it or we cannot afford to lose the processor, we recommend not doing it.

Experts such as der8auer or Linus Tech, do this practice quite regularly, but they have been doing this practice for years, even so, they often comment that the processor has been broken for different reasons and it is that no matter how expert you are, you can break the processor . They have a guarantee, because they work directly with the manufacturers and if they break one, they will give them five more without problems, but for an ordinary user this means losing the processor and being forced to buy another. There are many safe practices in the hardware world, such as overclocking, which can easily go back to product serial frequencies, but damaging the processor silicon has no turning back.

  1. Also making Oc to the processor makes you lose the warranty. But hey, the interesting thing is the device that der8auer has taken to make delid.
Although tear the pc, better when it has broken or we do not care.
by the way, don't understand the comparison of the ryzen with the i7-7700k, you may have read it wrong.

    1. What doing OC to the processor takes away the guarantee, you have invented it. Do not misinform people, if you have no idea of something better, do not talk.

      1. Well, we can clearly apply this to you. The delid or remove the IHS of the processor eliminates the guarantee of processors not only from Intel, but also from AMD. We do not misinform people, we mitigate the ignorance of some.

  2. Hello Roberto, I wanted to consult you. I have an old GPU and I don't mind damaging it trying to do a delid. I would like to know your opinion about making the delid directly with natural liquid metal… mercury.

  3. But what nonsense, because a processor prepared to make it oc like for example an i5 K or an i7 K would lose the guarantee
