The new Intel NUC will arrive with Apollo Lake processors of great features and performance.
Intel has not officially announced or spoken in its media about the new Apollo Lake for the Intel NUC. Despite the lack of data from Intel, a document has been found on the Intel website where the technical data of the motherboard of the new NUCs with support for Apollo Lake processors can be seen.
The website showcases the NUC6CAYH and NUC6CAYS compact computers, which feature 2GB of RAM, 32GB of eMMC storage, and Windows 10 as their operating system. Liliputing has reported that, as is typical, the NUC motherboards will have a four-inch square footprint and has published a comprehensive PDF detailing the specifications of these new motherboards. As usual, the processor will be soldered to the board. We know it will incorporate a quad-core Intel Celeron J3455 with Intel 500DH graphics and a TDP of just 10W.
One of these NUCs will have 8GB of DDR3L 1866MHz SO-DIMM RAM. For storage we can use an eMMC card, a 2.5 ”SATA III drive or an M.2 module with M.2 2230 support (this slot is previously used with the Intel 3168 Dual Band Wireless-AC 802.11ac network card and the Bluetooth 4.2 module). It could be that you don't need an extra network card at the end, because you have the Realtek 8111HN Gigabit Ethernet controller for network management.
The front will consist of only a jack connector that will combine the audio output and microphone input or we can output the sound through the HDMI interface. There is additionally a 5.1 / 7.1 optical audio connector on the rear panel. While in the back we have an HDMI 2.0 port and a VGA. Finally, in terms of expansion ports, we have two USB 3.0 ports in front of us, of which one has a device charging system even though the NUC is off and two USB 3.0 ports at least on the back. It has a card reader on one side. They will not have a USB Type-C port.
Through the technology integrated in the Apollo Lake processor, this equipment will be able to offer 4K 60fps content through the HDMI port and supports 1920 × 1200 pixels at 60Hz through the VGA connector. Additionally, a 30% improvement in performance is expected compared to Cherry Trail and Braswell, a 30% improvement in the GPU compared to Braswell, they can support DDR4 and for laptops, extend battery life by at least one 15% compared to Braswell.
