AMD Increases R&D Budget by 15% Thanks to AMD Ryzen and AMD EPYC

AMD increases the budget for research and development, especially thanks to the AMD Ryzen processors, which meant the takeoff of the company or the bankruptcy and disappearance of the same.

The year 2017 has been especially good for AMD, especially in the field of processors, where AMD Ryzen and AMD EPYC have sold very well and the RX 400 Series and RX 500 Series have also sold, especially due to mining, leaving a Little aside the RX Vega, which have not been half as good as expected. This has caused, among other things, that the company's research and development capital has increased by 15%, something that will allow it to increase competitiveness against Intel and NVIDIA in the coming years.

The company is true that it has put everything to develop the Zen microarchitecture, which has been used to create the AMD Ryzen. The effort has been very high, due to the limited resources of the company, since economically it was not good at all and they have allocated resources and efforts to develop competitive processors and graphics. So much so, that Ryzen was a heads or tails bet, if it came up heads, the company breathed and they could move on, the tails, it was bankruptcy. Microsoft and Samsung were already on the lookout, waiting for a misstep, which in the end has not happened, luckily.

AMD has had a great year and as a result of this year, they have managed to increase resources for research and development by 15% in 2017, which although it is a small injection, for AMD it means a lot to improve competitiveness. This year, if the second-gen Ryzen and Zen and Vega-based APUs perform as expected, the company could increase the budget for R&D. In addition, we must add Intel's Kaby Lake-G processors, which incorporate Vega M graphics, another injection of capital and the EPYC processors, which compete in price with Intel solutions and have in favor, being immune to Meltdown. It seems that the stars are aligning in favor of AMD.

  1. It is good news that they can invest more in R&D, let's hope they continue this course and do not go wrong, although Zen 2 smells very very good to me, really. It gives me the feeling that this is going to be the highlight with respect to intel.
