AMD Honored with Catalyst Award
Yesterday, Wednesday, September 7, AMD Awarded Catalyst Award For Its 25 × 20 Energy Efficiency Initiative, submitted by the Green Electronics Council (GEC) after review by an independent panel of judges.
AMD Honored with Catalyst Award
The award was formally announced at the Electronics Goes Green 2016 conference in Berlin on September 7, 2016. AMD is ahead of the pace set to achieve its ambitious goal of dramatically improving the efficiency of its mobile microprocessors 25 times by 2020, starting in 2014.
“AMD has clearly stood out among a strong group of finalists for its ability to catalyze sustainability impact at scale,”
said Nancy Gillis, executive director of the Green Electronics Council.
“Bringing new architecture and power management to computer chips has a huge impact on managing energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and is another example of the critical role technology plays in building a sustainable world.”
As part of its 25 × 20 initiative, AMD is developing new processor architectures, energy efficiency technologies, and energy management techniques to achieve the goal of accelerating the energy efficiency of your processors.
As an example, 6th generation AMD A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) (codenamed "Carrizo") introduced in 2015 for laptops, offered an energy efficiency improvement of 2,7 times compared to its 2014 predecessor. [i] This improvement imposed a pace well ahead of the trend line to achieve the 25x20 goal.
At the same time, 6th generation AMD Series A APUs achieved a reduction of approximately 46 percent in carbon emissions life cycle compared to previous generation APUs. [ii]
And further demonstrating AMD's commitment to energy-efficient computing, la new series of Radeon ™ RX 400 GPUs based on Polaris architecture can be up to 2,8 times more energy efficient than graphics cards made just two years ago.
