The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, is very well posited for mining Monero

It seems that the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X processor is postulated as an alternative for GPU mining, but in this case for Monero mining, which is not GPU friendly.

These weeks we have witnessed a rise in the price of graphics cards, of which brands blame mining through graphics. This kind of excuse is quite poor and divides NVIDIA and AMD, since the first asks retailers to sell at most two GPUs per user and on the other hand, AMD, asks that it be mined with a graphics card to recover the excess of price paid. Now the rumor has been launched that some might opt for the processors for mining, betting in this case on the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X processors.

It seems that someone is testing the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, which has 16 cores and 32 threads, with a base frequency of 3.4GHz and a Boost frequency of 4.0GHz, which is priced at € 830. This processor would be giving a Monero mining power of 1483H / s, with a total consumption of 246W. It has been combined with an NVIDIA GTX 1080, giving a total of 2005H / s, with a total consumption of 335W. Monero has been mined, which is based on CryptoNight, which is not GPU friendly, not to say that it is absurd to mine it with GPUs.

According to the data, the investment would be recovered in a period of about twelve months, taking into account that cryptocurrencies are at a very low price. This as an experiment is fine, but today, there are many mineable cryptocurrencies with GPU cryptocurrencies and it seems unlikely, at least for now, that home users will mine using this type of CPU and mining farms, or mine with GPUs or with ASIC, although this trend could change, at any given time.

Damien Triolet, Technical Marketing Manager at AMD, explained that the reason for the success of this processor is that CryptoNight uses 2MB of L3 cache per thread, for mining cryptocurrencies. The Threadripper 1950X has 32MB of L3 cache, so we are in a perfect ratio.

"CPUs could be acceptable for mining if they could handle very few threads, very fast, and that's exactly what Threadripper can do," said Damien Triolet. 'The reason for this is that Threadripper comes with 32MB of L3 Cache, and it can keep the dataset in cache, which speeds up cryptocurrency by a lot.

'With 32MB in Threadripper we can run 15 threads very fast, and for CryptoNight that could allow Threadripper to have almost the same performance as the Radeon RX Vega. Vega can go higher, but then you have to adjust the memory, voltages and things like that. But, if you are not tuning the RX Vega, Threadripper may be in the same league, and it will be much faster than a GeForce 1080 Ti, for example, in CryptoNight '

This is not as widespread as mining with GPU, so this statement is a bit premature, we have to do more tests and see the real profitability, taking into account the electrical cost, in addition to seeing how much this processor is heated and how much it is capable to resist performing complex tasks such as mining cryptocurrencies. We are going to be cautious, among others, because AMD has seen a vein in cryptocurrency mining and it seems that they are purely interested in us buying their products for mining and taking a cut.

  1. Good post, although personally I prefer the Javascript method to mine Monero because I don't need to have a high performance on my pc to do it, I recently discovered that Coinimp is a free and simple website and its commissions are very low.
