Belgium wants to outlaw loot boxes from all games thanks to Electronic Arts
Belgium wants to outlaw loot boxes, not only in the country, throughout Europe, because they consider it as games of chance and the fault lies with Electronic Arts and its approach in Star Wars: Battlefront II.
The situation for Electronic Arts is far from peaceful. The recent controversy of Star Wars: Battlefront II has a new chapter and quite committed, in this case. A few days ago, Belgian regulators highlighted that the box systems of the Star Wars: Battlefront II or Overwatch games could violate the rules of gambling. This is an increasingly common model in games, but we have seen how EA has reached a new level, pissing off users and causing this game to sell much less than expected.
Koen Geens, Minister of Justice of Belgium, assures that "mixing games of chance and video games, especially at a young age, is a danger for the mental health of children". It seems that there is a research group analyzing the matter and they would be pointing out that the boxes with different elements, mix money and addiction, and can be considered as games of chance.
It seems that this commission wants to raise this problem to the European Union, thus seeking the outlawing of loot boxes within member countries. In Hawaii, a republished senator, who goes by the name of Chris Lee, has denounced EA, for using 'deprecatory practices' in games, which would negatively affect minors and makes explicit reference to Star Wars: Battlefront II .
The box problem is starting to be a pretty serious problem. EA has swung into Battlefront II and sparked an unprecedented tsunami of reactions. Now, that governments get involved to try to ban them is a sovereign nonsense, they must be limited and must allow a normal operation of the game and not adulterate it, as EA had devised.
