Bethesda finally explains why Brink has become free on Steam
Bethesda Vice President of Marketing Pete Hines explains why the Brink game has become a free-to-play game within Steam, as the initial Bethesda press release did not explain why.
It is not very normal for a game that is working relatively well to become a Free-to-play game, usually it is the other way around. Brink, the game developed by Bethesda, a few days ago became a completely free game on Steam, something that caught everyone by surprise, because there was no data on this possible event. Bethesda in a press release did not give data, but it had to be Pete Hines, Vice President of Marketing of said company, who in a interview for IGN media during QuakeCon, has solved the mystery.
Hines' initial response has been 'why not'. Hines has highlighted that in the last batch of offers on the Valve platform, the Brink game was priced at $ 0.99, so there was no important difference between the part that they had per copy sold than the one that they took now that the game is free. Hines points out that now people may think about buying the game's DLC, something that will allow them to continue to have a certain volume of income from this game.
Bethesda may have hit the mark, because the game had lost players since its launch and is now registering significant spikes in players, even higher than at the time of its launch, back in 2011. The game has now been discontinued from the PlayStation Network platform, but it is possible that Brink becomes a free title within the Games with Gold of the Xbox 360 platform. It is not the first time that something similar happens when a game runs out of its useful life and to continue entering through a title , it is sought to make it free and income is generated with DLC or the acquisition of weapons and payment elements.
