The Boeing company has suffered an attack through the WannaCry ransomware, which has caused the infection of several systems that are responsible for the assembly of the wings of its aircraft, but has not caused any delays.
One of the most important aircraft companies in the world, such as Boeing Commercial Airplanes, has been attacked by the well-known WannaCry ransomware. The American company, which manufactures some of the most recognized aircraft models in the world, has confirmed that a small number of computers, which had the task of automating the assembly of the wing spars of the aircraft, have been hijacked . This has occurred at the Charleston, South Carolina facility.
This incident, according to the company itself, has not affected the delivery schedule in the least. The company, at its facilities in South Carolina, is responsible for the manufacture and distribution of commercial wide-body aircraft, including the new 787 Dreamliner, of which more than 700 of this type of aircraft have been ordered.
The problem is that Boeing, like many other companies, has old equipment that handles different vital manufacturing points and that are vulnerable to different current malware. The problem usually lies in the fact that changing the key equipment for certain tasks is not something that is done in five minutes and everything must work the first time, something that, whoever is dedicated to systems and others will know, never happens. Stopping different production points one hour can mean the loss of thousands of euros and very long delays, that is why, if the thing works, it is not touched.
We do not know how long it will have taken to solve this problem, but it is possible that they have done some type of Backup or copy load of the management system and they will work again. Updating equipment and software is very important, but it must be borne in mind that updating a computer that manages complex processes is not the same as a home computer.
