3D caching will make stock Ryzen 7 5800X3D difficult

For now the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D it is the only consumer-grade processor to include an additional stacked 3D V-Cache that sits above the compute dies. It is a new technology and only available in a single model, which makes it difficult and expensive.

The processor is expected to end up being a limited edition for the most enthusiastic. Or that at least its stock is not very abundant and is only reserved for the most exquisite who do not want to wait for the AMD Zen 4.

The AMD 3D cache of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D would start out being very limited

According to Digitimes sources, TSMC's 3D SoIC technology is not yet in the state of mass production, and thus the available capacity is limited and earmarked for chips for enterprise systems. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is building a new packaging plant in Chunan, Taiwan, which is scheduled to go online later this year, though it may not be ready in time for volume production of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D before launch. from Zen 4 later this year.

AMD believes that additional L3 cache will lead to a significant boost in gaming performance over the standard 5800X. The vanilla version wasn't bad, but with the recent release of the Intel Core Alder Lake, they might have been pressured by not being considered the best gaming processor and they want to regain that position even if it's with a low-stock model. 3D Cache applied to games would, being sensitive to latency, benefit from not having to access DRAM as often. AMD claims that the technology can provide a 15 percent boost in performance, which on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D could be enough to put it ahead of the i9-12900K.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is scheduled to go on sale in the spring of 2022, so we will have to wait a few more months. If TSMC's limited manufacturing capacity holds until mid-2022 or beyond, the 5800X3D may remain a niche processor. In addition, it could be replaced by Zen 4 series CPUs in the second half of this year 2022.
