# CES2018: Cherry MX Introduces New Cherry MX Low Profile RGB Mechanical Switches

Cherry MX has presented at CES 2018, the new low-profile mechanical keys, the Cherry MX Low Profile RGB, which will reduce the size of gaming keyboards, without affecting performance and features.

Most high-end market keyboards use Cherry MX keys. These mechanical keys have a significant thickness, although the company that makes the best mechanical keys on the market has introduced the new low-profile mechanical keys. Until now, desktop keyboards had large-format keys and laptops had special smaller-format company keys, but Cherry has introduced the Cherry MX Low Profile RGB Red, which are slightly smaller than today's keys, so we will have more compact keyboards.

This has been achieved with a complete redesign of its internal mechanism and also of the external part of the mechanical switch, something that has made it possible to reduce the size of the mechanical keys by almost 7mm, going from 18.5mm in height to 11.9mm in height. Reducing the size of these mechanical keys, allows to reduce the height of the keyboards and will also allow redesign the casings of each key, making them thinner. The difference in thickness is quite clear, allowing you to see the difference in size between the conventional Cherry MX RED and the new Low Profile RED, which would not affect the final performance of the keys.

Changes in use should not be appreciated, since these low-profile switches are completely the same as the older brothers, this means that the pressure we must exert is 45Nm, but in this case the travel of these keys is slightly reduced. mechanical, going from 4mm of travel to 3.2mm. The contacts have been coated with gold to improve conductivity and reduce oxidation at the terminals. They also have these mechanical keys with RGB LED lighting independently, so they do not differ in any way from other solutions on the market.

Initially, the RED versions of these Low Profile RGB keys will be released, although the company has reported that the BLUE, BROWN and BLACK versions will be released shortly. We don't know when the first keyboards with these new mechanical switches will arrive either, but it shouldn't take long. It is possible that Corsair was the first manufacturer to launch a keyboard with these switches, as it will already happen with the Cherry MX Silver switches.
