Toshiba creates an algorithm that enables a desktop computer to perform like a supercomputer
The announcement that Toshiba has made is surprising. The company has released an algorithm inspired by quantum computers. This algorithm is capable of outperforming other algorithms that run on supercomputers. The most curious thing is that this performance improvement has been obtained with a very simple desktop computer. Something that could not only save millions in hardware, but also achieve energy efficiency.
Hayato Goto, a Senior Researcher at Toshiba, has created this algorithm which he has named the "Simulated Branching Algorithm". For this it has been realized that complex systems can change suddenly when new inputs are added, generating a phenomenon called bifurcation.

The combinatorial optimization algorithm seeks to obtain an approximate solution of a high combination number. It is based on a branch of mathematics and computer science that seeks to optimize systems.
Note that Goto had the idea in 2015, costing him two years to obtain an algorithm that could perform a large number of calculations. He was looking for a simple computer to do the same as a quantum computer. This algorithm can be run on a desktop computer that we can assemble for a low cost.
Goto later teamed up with Kosuke Tatsumura, another Toshiba researcher, who is highly knowledgeable in semiconductors. They both managed to make this algorithm highly scalable.
This algorithm has been developed to work on a common computer, but it can also work on server CPU and FPGA clusters. For an FPGA cluster, Toshiba's algorithm is ten times faster than a laser-based quantum computer. Quantum laser-based systems are the most powerful today.
Quantum computers are developed to solve all the problems that are tackled with this algorithm. The problem with quantum computers is that they are not powerful enough for all these possibilities. Goto, in this case, has found a new way that classical algorithms can solve complex problems faster than a quantum computer. The good news is that the same work can be done with fewer resources.
Toshiba currently plans to give access to this algorithm through payment to financial and stock market companies. It could also offer access to manufacturing companies, social media and other companies that have to do complex calculations.
