Noctua has shown three heatsink prototypes for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors and for the AMD EPYC, which will not be in final version when these processors are officially released, according to information coming from Computex 2017.
The arrival of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors, as well as the AMD EPYC processors, requires the arrival of new cooling systems, mainly high-power and that is why Noctua has gotten to work. AMD processors are quite large, therefore the base of the heatsinks must grow enough to adjust to the DIE of the new sockets AMD SP3r3 (Ryzen Threadripper) and AMD SP3 (AMD EPYC), without at any time leaving aside power and efficiency in cooling.
The images show that the mounting mechanism of these heatsinks is much larger than what we are used to, so these may be intended for AMD EPYC. That Noctua has developed special heatsinks for these processors, makes it clear that current solutions will not be compatible with EPYC and Ryzen Threadripper, so we must add to the purchase of these processors, the outlay on a heatsink, which possibly in future generations of processors , do not serve. Adapters may be developed to add support, but it seems quite complex with these processors.
Noctua has reported that these two families of processors for such different audiences will support the same type of mounting, despite the fact that the heatsinks are different. The solutions shown by Noctua at Computex 2017 are simply prototypes based on the NH-U14S, NH-U12S and NH-U9 and the commercial versions of these heatsinks have not been confirmed. In addition, everything indicates that in the first instance we will not have heatsinks compatible with AMD Threadripper, which is a very important problem, because the basic solutions that AMD and Intel offer for their processors, are usually quite poor.
This is a very serious problem for anyone who wants one of these processors and more so considering that the Intel X299 or Basins Falls will have compatible heatsinks, since the size of the processor is the same as in the processors with an LGA2011-3 socket. We do not know much about the heatsinks that AMD will offer for these processors, but they will have to be of quality if there are no solutions on the market to dissipate the heat of these processors.
