Discord reaches an agreement with Sony and will be integrated into PlayStation

It is not a purchase agreement, but Discord will be integrated into PlayStation consoles. It will arrive early next year.

Several months ago Microsoft fully tried to acquire Discord, which would be a great substitute for Skype or Whatsapp and it would allow the service to be exclusively added to consoles of the Xbox family, and even to move it away from Mac and Linux. But the agreement did not go ahead because Discord wants to remain as an independent platform and reach closed platforms through agreements. That is what Discord has achieved by coming to a union with PlaYStation.

Discord can be used on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5

Sony has announced that it is partnering with Discord and will integrate the service into the PlayStation Network early next year. They want to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer to consoles and mobile devices early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to communicate more easily while playing together.

Nothing is sure yet what this integration will look like. It is expected that there will be a chat interface in Discord, as well as access to the channels to which we are subscribed, fully integrated using only our Discord login. That would make communication between gaming communities somewhat easier as games that do not have dedicated servers to talk, share tips and guides, and organize game sessions are rare. It may also make it possible to video or voice chat with our Discord contacts using the console without having to use a computer or mobile.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has also made a minority investment in Discord as part of its H Series round. Discord now has more than 140 million users. This should not prevent Microsoft from reaching another agreement on its part with Discord to integrate it within its Xbox One and Xbox series X consoles, if that is the case.
