Microsoft FPS Boost improve performance of classic games on new Xbox

Microsoft Announces New FPS Boost Technology To Improve Classic Game Performance On New Xbox Series X And Xbox Series S

The performance of a game is usually measured in the amount of FPS that it can offer under certain hardware. Depending on the optimization of the game and how powerful our hardware, we will have more or less FPS. Microsoft has revealed on its official blog Xbox FPS Boost technology. This new technology, to our knowledge, will be exclusive to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

Microsoft reveals FPS Boost technology for its next-generation Xbox consoles

According to the company, this new technology allows practically four times the performance of a game without problems. For specific cases, this figure can even be exceeded. Microsoft's FPS Boost will allow 30FPS limited previous generation console games to go up to 120FPS without much trouble.

What this Microsoft FPS Boost technology does is improve the FPS rate without the developers having to do anything and without updates. Microsoft highlights that this technology has been developed to eliminate GPU bottlenecks. Development has been carried out by Microsoft's compatibility team, who have adjusted the FPS limits at the Direct3D level.

They have found it necessary to do this work on their new consoles based on Zen 2 processors and RDNA2 graphics. This has achieved a quite remarkable improvement in the performance of previous generation games. To our knowledge the only optimized games have been:

  • Far Cry 4
  • New Super Lucky's Tale
  • Sniper Elite 4
  • UFC 4
  • Watchdogs 2

Microsoft emphasizes that soon more games will receive support for FPS Boost. This technology will have a specific menu that will enable this new technology to be enabled.

Optimizing “classic” games

The company has highlighted that they have chosen these five titles for their great popularity. Also, it seems that these games make use of FPS Boost in different ways. The development of this solution has been made possible with the collaboration of the developers of these games.

This puts Microsoft even further ahead of Sony when it comes to backward compatibility of games. Currently Microsoft's catalog is much larger than Sony's. Games in the Microsoft catalog will now benefit from better performance. But above all, FPS Boost stands out for not requiring game updates and it will not require developers' time either.

All of this will be enabled via icons in the menu and new settings options coming soon. In the spring, we'll be able to go to the "game manager" and enable or disable FPS Boost and Auto HDR. There will also be an indicator that tells us that FPS Boost is active.
