Sony executives point out that the PS5 will be expensive
During a press conference in Japan, Sony executives point out that the PlayStation 5 will not be exactly a cheap console.
These days the PlayStation 5 is on everyone's lips for a leak of the possible price in Swedento. There is no reliable data that it is its final price, but it is a possibility, considering what this console would supposedly offer. During a press event in Japan, several Sony executives have warned that the price could be something. These executives emphasize that the high prices would be due to commercial tariffs.
The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on all products imported from China. This is a problem for all companies that produce in that country or import certain components. Sony is one of these companies and they are not willing to lose money with their new console.
PlayStation 5 could be more expensive than the current generation
Due to the tariff issue, Sony could launch the PlayStation 5 at a higher cost than expected. But it is that Sony, according to the specifications that we know, would be developing a Premium platform.
A Ryzen @ 7nm-based SoC paired with a fully RDNA Navi @ 7nm GPU won't exactly be cheap. This console should support 4K @ 120Hz gaming (or up to 120Hz, according to console proponents) and perhaps 8K video playback. Sony also says that the PlayStation 5 is targeting video game enthusiasts, not to replace the PlayStation 4.
A few weeks ago Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, in a letter, asked the United States to end the tariffs on China. They emphasize that these impositions would cause the price of hardware for consoles to rise. This would force them to raise prices and sell far fewer consoles.
This new warning from the directors makes us think that the PlayStation 5 will not be an economical solution. If they are already light years away from a computer in terms of quality and performance, if the filtering cost, it would not sell. Nobody in their right mind would pay € 1000 (more or less) for a closed platform that reaches the obsolete market.
