PlayStation 5: It is filtered that the processor will work at 1.6GHz and will arrive in Boost mode at 3.2GHz
It is leaked that the Gonzalo SoC of the next PlayStation 5 could be working as a base at 1.6GHz and in Boost mode it could reach 3.2GHz.
The hype that is being generated around the next generation of consoles is very big and only grows. Theoretically, both the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett support at least 4K @ 60FPS. We don't know much about the AMD processor and graphics that will be integrated into the Sony console. The PlayStation 5 will be based on the Gonzalo SoC.
What we know about Gonzalo is that it will be based on Zen2 @ 7nm, like the current Ryzen 3000 processors. This SoC will integrate 8 cores and 16 processing threads. Its frequency was unknown so far, but it has been leaked. According to the data, this processor will work at 1.6GHz and in Boost mode it will reach 3.2GHz.
PlayStation 5 frequencies revealed
The notable reduction of frequencies with respect to commercial processors, supposes an adjustment of the TDP. Lowering the frequencies not only reduces consumption, but also the generation of heat. Something important in consoles, since being very compact, the heat dissipation capacity is extremely limited.
Together with this processor, everything indicates that we will have a Navi graph based on RDNA, but little else is known. The graphics and the processor will share the GDDR6 memory that will be integrated into the motherboard itself. Where an SSD will also be installed, possibly NVMe, a necessary and highly demanded leap.
Something that seems to be disappearing from the equation is Ray Tracing. Initially it was said that the consoles would support this technology, which seems to no longer be of interest. Currently no game implements all the features of this technology and we see NVIDIA's dedicated graphics with specific hardware suffer major performance drops. Perhaps due to technological difficulties, it is not implemented or if it is implemented, in a very limited way.
