Xbox Series X will add 'Ray Tracing Audio' support

Promises have to be kept, and both Sony and Microsoft are writing hefty checks. Above all, it is Microsoft who is announcing some technologies for the Xbox Series X that are very good, but that we will have to see later. Besides adding ray tracing in games, 'Ray Tracing Audio' will also be implemented. It's basically a trade name for a new advanced sound technology.

Jason Roland, Director of Program Management at Xbox we have learned about 'Ray Tracing Audio' technology. Logically this technology has nothing to do with tracing light rays, it is different, since we are talking about sound. He has explained it in the program 647 of the Major Nelson Podcast. Basically it is the acceleration of sound by hardware, specifically, through the GPU.

Xbox Series X will have 'Ray Tracing Audio'

With the introduction of accelerated Ray Tracing hardware on Xbox Series X, we will be able to enable a new set of scenery, more realistic lighting, better reflections, and can even use it for things like spatial audio.

Jason Roland, Director of Program Management, Xbox

Microsoft is aware that sound enriches any gaming experience. Having the best graphics and sound quality, passable at best, doesn't seem very appealing. It seeks to offer the best sound quality, as well as the most realistic sound possible.

Learn from the sound designers of Borderlands 3 and Gears of War 5 about how a collaboration between Microsoft, Dolby, and our middleware partners started a revolution in spatial sound, turning any headphone into a gateway to another world. Attendees will immerse themselves in an audio design pathway and in the relationship with hardware acceleration on next-generation consoles.

It sounds very interesting and we are looking forward to knowing how this Microsoft implementation will work. But the spatial sound, which is its truest name, wears less than the term Ray Tracing, now on everyone's lips.
