A few days ago, Nicolás Maduro announced 'El Petro', his own cryptocurrency to solve the economic problems of the country, which is suffering a great recession. The problem is that in the country it is completely illegal to mine cryptocurrencies and to accept payments with cryptocurrencies, something that the government is penalizing with jail time. Maduro clarified that this digital currency would be backed by the country's gold, gas, oil and diamond reserves. This coin does not yet exist, but a fake website has already appeared about this cryptocurrency, which appears to be a scam.
This website called elpetro.lat, has been established as an official platform for the Venezuelan cryptocurrency, where it is mentioned that this cryptocurrency intends to be a solution to bypass the financial block of the United States. The page announces a total of 100 million tokens of this public blockchain. The portal is not at all reliable, since despite directing to official social networks of the Venezuelan government, the domains are not hosted in Venezuela, as if it happens with other pages, curiously and ironically, it is hosted in the United States.
The IP address of the page indicates 199.188.206.6, which bounces off the city of Los Angeles. If we do a little more analysis and go through Whois, the domain platform is paid from NameCheap, based in Panama and has also been registered in this country, something that would confirm the falsehood of the page. This domain has been created very recently and has been updated just a few hours ago, which makes us very suspicious.
Venezuela for this cryptocurrency would have created the Blockchain Observatory and the Superintendency of Cryptocurrencies, to supervise this currency. The problem is that it aims to improve the economy and solve the country's financing problems, something that will be very complicated and that will depend in some way on the trust of users. Many already call this cryptocurrency a failure, about which we know absolutely nothing.
