The 10th Anniversary of Bitcoin Pizza Day was commemorated yesterday, but what is that?

May 22, 2020, marks the 2010th anniversary of the famous Bitcoin Pizza Day, in which a Florida man made the first recorded physical purchase using Bitcoin. On this day in 10,000, Laszlo Hanyecz, left a mark in history after paying XNUMX Bitcoin, which is worth millions of dollars today, for two great Papa John's pizzas.

Hanyecz is a Bitcoin miner and programmer who contributed to the source code of Bitcoin during the early days of the network when 1 BTC was less than a penny. Having mined tens of thousands of BTC, Hanyecz decided to demonstrate Bitcoin's proof of concept. Posting on BitcoinTalk that he would give up 10.000 Bitcoins in exchange for a couple of pizzas.

Thank you Lazlo for the Bitcoin Pizza Day

Although he made the post on May 17, he couldn't find someone to accept the offer until May 22, when Hanyecz reported that he had successfully exchanged the cryptocurrency for Pizzas, courtesy of a British man.

A month after the first exchange, Hanyecz made an open offer that he was willing to continue exchanging 10.000 BTC for two great pizzas. As long as he had the bottom, he generally has in bulk considering his status as a miner. This would mean that you probably spent much more Bitcoin buying what you described as your daughter's favorite snack.

At the time, 10.000 BTC was only $ 30, so it seemed like a fair deal for both parties. However, today, with the price of Bitcoin currently at $ 9.100, 10.000 BTC is worth more than $ 91 million. Which represents a growth of more than 300.000.000% in the last ten years, an incredibly incredible feat. It's no wonder that Bitcoin has been rated as the best performing asset of the last decade.

Speaking in the 60 Minutes CBS show Last year, Hanyecz said he just thought it would be really cool if he traded "open source internet money for a real-world good" and Pizza (food) was the perfect fit. He said that he believes his action helped promote cryptocurrency as a medium of exchange.

Today, Laszlo Hanyecz is considered a legendary figure in the crypto world who inspired the global Bitcoin Pizza Day. And members of the crypto community will certainly continue to celebrate the anniversary of the first Bitcoin transaction.
