Cryptocurrencies

The RAE adds “cryptocurrency” and “Bitcoin” to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language

Cryptocurrencies, and the most popular and representative cryptocurrency of the crypto movement, already have a definition in the Royal Spanish Academy's Dictionary of the Spanish Language. That's right, put simply: the RAE includes "cryptocurrency" and "bitcoin" and their definition in its dictionary for anyone who wants to consult it.

To be clear: the Royal Spanish Academy does not unilaterally decide the meaning or uses of a word, nor does it have any power over language. Its task is to collect enough widespread uses of a word in the Spanish language, collect its use and explain it in the dictionary so that any curious person, whether Spanish or foreign, can consult how it is written, its gender, its origin and what it means. .

Thus, the official body that is the RAE, which collects the uses and definitions of terms in the Spanish language, includes the definition of both the word "cryptocurrency" and "bitcoin", although the latter is a registered trademark. This inclusion is known due to a official publication of the Royal Spanish Academy, which collects new words to be added to edition 23.5 of the Dictionary of the Spanish Language. These definitions are already entered on the website of the Royal Spanish Academy.
