Mining the Chia cryptocurrency will void the warranty on a Galax SSD

Galax warns users on its Chinese website that mining cryptocurrencies like Chia with companies' SSDs will void their warranty. This recent cryptocurrency focuses on storage for mining coins rather than requiring the best mining GPUs.

Chia is not yet available for trading, but it is already gaining popularity due to its lower energy cost thanks to its mining method. Chia is based on a "time and space test» to mine the currency on hard drives and SSDs. It is not necessary to optimize your GPU for mining, but it is expected that if it becomes popular, it will happen like with GPUs and the SSDs and hard drives will be the hardest components to get. And there are already manufacturers who want to keep these products out of the hands of miners.

Galax is the first that aims to discourage the mining of Chia by threatening the guarantee

Chia's developers designed Chia to be mined in this way, making cryptocurrency mining more accessible to the end user, does not have a high energy cost, and does not require the purchase of single-use hardware like miners. .

Today, Chia already has more than 950 petabytes of storage, consisting of 101,4GiB plots. All that storage is hard drives and SSDs in the possession of miners, not consumers. Given the amount of written data that is needed to create a Chia diagram and how aggressive it is for an SSD, Galax is already preventing users from using the warranty if they see that they have mined Chia.

As some NVIDIA manufacturers have done, the warranty will be voided if an SSD or hard drive is found to have undermined Chia. They want with this to make the mass purchase of hard drives and SSDs for mining less profitable and attractive. A normal consumer should not be affected by this because he will not be constantly making his storage hardware work, but in large cryptocurrency mining in which economies of scale and optimizing profits are necessary, the risk of losing the guarantee before time can discourage your purchase.
