Micron has already developed GDDR6 memories that will work up to 16GB / s, although initially these memories will reach slightly lower speeds.
The hardware market in general has had a great year, but this year we have suffered one of the most absurd and most damaging things for users' pockets, which has been the brutal rise in the price of NAND Flash memories, which has impacted in RAM, SSDs and finally in graphics cards. It seems that 2018 will be better in this regard. Meanwhile, Micron, one of the three main manufacturers of this type of memory, has developed GDDR6 memories and already produces to send memories to NVIDIA and AMD, according to demand.
A few days ago Samsung already announced that it had 6GB / s GDDR16 memories ready and that it would present them at CES 2018 to be held shortly in Las Vegas. SK Hynix, for its part, offers GDDR6 memories working at 14GB / s and finally Micron has arrived with its GDDR6 memories, but in this case they will work at 16GB / s, so the one that would be further back in this race is SK Hynix. It should be noted that these speeds are what they will be able to reach, as the months go by, since they will initially operate below these speeds, while they are polishing the process and selecting the chips.
It is expected that during the first quarter of 2018, GDDR6 memories work at speeds of between 12-14GB / s, except for Samsung, which will be the only company that will really be able to offer 16GB / s memory. The GDDR6 memories are characterized by an FBGA package system that implements 180 solder pins at a distance of 0.75mm, with a Dual Channel construction, compared to the Simple Channel of the GDDR5X and the FBGA 190 package.
The company also wanted to make it clear that they are not only for graphics cards, that they have other applications outside of this sector, being able to be used in the automotive market or telecommunication systems. It has also been commented by the company that they are working on a mass production of GDDR5 memories through a more advanced process, which will improve working speeds and provide them to customers in the long term.
