Millions of players will not be able to play in Google Stadie due to the limits of their internet
In countries like the United States or Australia, Google Stadia would be unfeasible as the main platform. Six million players would exceed their maximum monthly limit.
34 million gamers in the United States play video games for an average of 22 hours per week. That works out to 88 hours a month and 1,386GB of data using 4K or 792GB 1080P service that Stadia offers. Of the 34 million gamers who play 22 hours per week, only 6 million know that they have a data limit imposed by their ISP, and it is a big problem for Google when it comes to setting up Stadia.
The data limit against streaming game
It's speculated that most hardcore gamers won't be able to rely solely on Google Stadia as their only gaming platform and will have to continue playing offline games on PC or consoles, which is precisely what this Google project aims to prevent. The number of affected gamers is estimated at six million in the United States alone, and this figure will gradually increase as image and sound quality, the game library, and latency improve.
According to analyst group NPD, even the highest data limits that are typically close to 1 TB or 1 GB per month would be exceeded by the most active gamers. It is important to note that this assumption only assumes that users would only use their connections to play with Stadia; and it does not take into account other activities such as streaming services or simply surfing the internet. And that in the case that it is a single person using that connection at home.
And it is not uncommon to have a data limit with your home internet connection given that from a survey of just over 900 respondents, 62% of players reported having one and more may not know they have it. Having these data explains the constant news of how much a game or an update weighs or that there is still a strong home video market and there are territories that have not adopted streaming. With the power that Google has and efforts to eliminate net neutrality, it is not difficult for Google to make a deal with ISPs in the United States and other countries to offer data packages to play Stadia or packages with unlimited access.
