AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D offers same or better gaming performance than i9-12900KF, and cheaper
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D will be AMD's last flagship CPU before the company moves to the new AM5 platform based on the 5nm Zen 4 architecture, with an emphasis on gaming performance. AMD has been marketing it as the world's fastest gaming processor, thanks to its new 3D V-Cache, which adds 64MB of L3 cache. They expect it to be a significant upgrade over current processors, allowing them to compete with Intel's 12th-generation Alder Lake series without having to wait for the Ryzen 7000 series processors.
The Peruvian website XanxoGaming has had in its hands a model of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. They published benchmarks with Cinebench, but since their performance in games was expected from the CPU, they have gone on to test a dozen titles. These tests have been possible before its official release because they claim to have obtained it thanks to a contact with a retailer.
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D performs as well as an i9-12900KF
Testing was done with a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founder's Edition setup on AMD and Intel systems, and using DDR4 RAM. They have stated that they intend to try DDR5 at a later date. Gaming benchmarks were run at 1080p and 720p resolutions to test the difference between the two CPUs.
The list of games in the test along with their results are as follows:
- Borderland 3: Intel i9-12900KF outperforms AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Intel manages 164 FPS but AMD is close behind with 163 FPS.
- Control: Intel i9-12900KF outperforms AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Intel manages 209 FPS but AMD is close behind with 208 FPS.
- Death Stranding: At 1080p Ultra, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D wins
- F1 2020: The Intel i9-12900KF wins with 288 FPS, but only beats the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 234 FPS by one frame over Intel's 224.
- Final Fantasy XV: At 1080p Ultra, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D wins with 217 FPS, with a wide margin over Intel's 168.
- Subway Exodus: At 1080p Ultra with DX12 and no RTX or DLSS, the Intel i9-12900KF wins with 132 FPS, but by a single frame over AMD.
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider: At 1080p Ultra on DX12, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D wins with 181 FPS over Intel's 164 FPS mark.
- The Witcher 3: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D wins with 253 FPS over Intel's 207 FPS.
- Assassin's Creed Origins: at 1080p Ultra quality, the Intel i9-12900KF wins by a single frame per second on average. Intel reaches 140 FPS and AMD at 139.
- Strange Brigade: 1080p Ultra quality with Async ON and DX12 beats the Intel i9-12900KF with 346 FPS on average, but the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D tops out at 343.
- Middle-earth: Shadow of War: In 1080p Ultra quality, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D wins with 206 FPS on average compared to 195 from Intel.
When it comes to the 1080p benchmarks mentioned, there isn't a huge difference on average between the processors when Intel wins. But when the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the one that wins in the comparison, it does so with a notable margin. These results claim that on average, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is 6-7% faster than Intel's offering.
It all depends on which games can best utilize AMD's 3D Cache. Furthermore, AMD has the advantage that its new CPU will be around one hundred dollars cheaper than Intel's . This makes it ideal for those looking for a high-end gaming PC, as $100 can be the difference between motherboard models.
