NVIDIA updates its Kepler GPUs to eliminate vulnerabilities
Nvidia has just released a new driver for owners of Kepler architecture GPUs , which are the first TITAN graphics cards, the GeForce 700 and 600 series. The driver fixes 12 vulnerabilities, four of which are classified as "high" severity.
This driver does not add any new features for these older GPUs. All non-security-related bugs and issues remain, as Nvidia discontinued Game Ready support for Kepler GPUs in the summer of 2021. These are very old and outdated GPUs, and they are starting to become obsolete for the minimum requirements of modern games, making them suitable for very old computers.
Update for GTX 600 and 700
The Nvidia GeForce v473.47 WHQL security update driver is available directly from the official NVIDIA website. There are drivers for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) users, and it weighs in at just over 700MB.
There are twelve CVEs fixed by the new driver. Four of these vulnerabilities are classified as “high” severity. The remaining eight vulnerabilities are of medium severity. For reference, a CVE score between 7,0 and 8,9 indicates a high severity vulnerability, while a CVE score between 4,0 and 6,9 is classified as medium severity.
All of the high-severity vulnerabilities appear to give malicious actors on your PC a means to gain administrator privileges . These vulnerabilities could also allow arbitrary code execution, denial of service, information disclosure, and data manipulation. One of the vulnerabilities, CVE-2022-28182, allows malicious acts to be performed over a network , but the others require someone to be physically using your PC.
This is the only security update Kepler GeForce users have received this year. In February, NVIDIA released a WHQL patch for GeForce drivers 473.04 and 472.98 to address multiple security vulnerabilities. With this update, NVIDIA acknowledges that some users still have very old graphics cards that are sufficient for gaming, even if not cutting-edge, and are finding it difficult to upgrade to a more modern one.
Below we list the GPUs of this architecture, in case you need to update their drivers for security.
