AMD announces Ryzen 7040 APUs with smaller Zen 4C cores

AMD has presented a new series of APUs, the Ryzen 7040, which will be based on Zen 4C cores, a smaller model that seeks to increase the number of cores, especially in closed systems such as laptops. The AMD Zen 4C DAC has a -35,4% smaller overall core area, the size on all sides has been reduced.

Architecturally, only the L3 cache per core has been reduced, from 4 MB per core to 2 MB per core. The rest of the specifications are completely identical to the Zen 4 counterparts. Both cores will continue to use the same ISA and IPC. And they will continue to be SMT compatible while maintaining gaming performance levels. AMD's Ryzen 7040 APU models with Zen 4C and Zen 4 that they have announced are the Ryzen 5 7545U and Ryzen 3 7440U. Both models have a TDP between 15 and 30 W and come with an AMD Radeon 740M GPU configuration which offers only 4 Compute Units or 256 stream processors. This means that they have integrated graphics with certain gaming capabilities, but very basic. AMD promises that the Zen 4 c will have the size of the matrix as a window, with greater density and energy efficiency.

They claim that smaller cores with the same IPC can use less power to deliver more performance below 15W. In terms of scalability, they allow increasing the number of cores in the high-end segment, while in the basic segment they will be able to offer more options to consumers.

They highlight that it will allow them to better deal with the basic range segment, since for now the Zen 4 CPUs have focused a lot on the high-end segment, while the mid- and low-end segment has been left to Intel. This would be the ultra-thin notebook and laptop segment, as the Zen 4C cores are optimized for multi-core size and efficiency. With all this, there is speculation in portals such as WCCFTech that AMD could use hybrid models in future CPUs and APUs, as Intel did a few generations ago with the Alder Lake architecture.
